I may have come up with a pseudo-scientific explanation of why we should use diesel rated oils, with additional zinc, in engines with flat tappets even after break in. Zinc is used for galvanizing iron and steel providing a protective coating.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galvanization

Without it, the steel may be unprotected from flat tappet abrasion.

You guys must have been talking about flat cams and Karls engine?

Karl, I don't recall, but did your cam go flat too?

I talked to the guy at the tranny shop today and showed him the tranny. He said it's one of his, it was rebuilt about 4 years ago and ther truck has been sitting for about the last 3 so it's got pretty low miles since the rebuild. He said he could swap all the internals into the correct case for 200 bucks if we supply the case, and 80 bucks more if he supplies it. For another 300 he could get us a special heavy-duty hand-brazed converter. He recommended changing the valve body as well since the springs that control the shift points are softer for the diesel, so that it shifts at lower RPM.

At this point I think we should look into the guy that Clint mentioned about working on the tranny for us. If that doesn't pan out, I know a guy who does auto tranny stuff on the side who could maybe do it for us cheaper. He's in So. Cal. on vacation right now but will be back Friday so I can contact him then.

$200 is fair, cheaper is better. I am told it is not much more labor involved to overhaul the tranny as to swap cases. But for a few dollars more I would go with the guy who already knows the tranny. Will the case we have at Mike's work?

Also, the different shift kit is going to be needed - we need to push the engine beyound 3k RPM, which is where the diesels run. Or can we use the kit from the tranny at Mikes?

I am in favor of taking up a collection and getting it done! What do you guys think?

I am willing to pony up some money for it. If we find someone cheaper somewhere else in the state, we (probably Dan) will have to haul transmission parts all over the state to get it fixed, then haul it back up to Dan's. That can cost us lots in gas and time. I say we go with the guy in Dan's neighborhood. (This is coming from a guy who just tried driving a truck back from Montana and then shipping the broken engine to Billings and back.)

Tell me who to send a check to.

Mike is the one handling the money - send it to him. He would rather get the money using PayPal - it keeps his wife from getting confused. Perhaps he can post directions and names again.

I can go $150, and I expect we will need around $400. Should we plan on a new torque converter too?

Also, lets let Dan pick the shop - if he trusts his friend he may choose to go with him.

That last one with Dan on the welder should be printed and saved, it's a good one!
Those tires & rims...are they going to be 33-12.50-(15,16, or 16.5)?
