CCV Question

Alright.. I'm not a big fan of running the hose all the way back to the bumper. So, here's my question, the previous owner had a bung welded into the down pipe of the exhaust (1/4" NPT). Can I route the CCV into this and have it route into the exhaust. Do you think this is too much of a step down? 3/4" to 1/4".

I don't have a cat or muffler.

I guess the other thing would be, would the exhaust in the down pipe actually increase the pressure of the crankcase. I could install a check valve, but if the pressure of the exhaust is higher, then it'll prevent CCV flow.

What do you guys think? If I were to do it, come off the DP w/ a 1/4" MNPT to 1/2" Tube Compression, SS Tube over the engine and then Union w/ 3/4" Hose barb x 1/2" Tube Stub, then about 6" of heater hose.

I'd just vent it out wherever you're comfortable. I have mine run back by the exhaust exit, but you can drop it straight down the side of the motor, or out the side by the driver (or passenger) door, etc.

The thing with the bung in the exhaust is that it's been tested and it created positive pressure in the wrong direction, just when you need it to be the other way (heavy acceleration). I forget who did it, but maybe they'll chime in. You want a slight vacuum or at least very little back pressure there. Definitely don't want positive pressure!!!

Do NOT put it in the downpipe. Way too much exhaust pressure there. You'll start leaking oil like crazy.

I think CSIPSD at one time had his routed in the exhaust tailpipe, but took it off. Maybe he'll chime in as to why.

Mine leaked too but that was becaue I got the angle wrong. Once I got it right, it stopped leaking and is fine now.

If you make the angle to were it isnt taking on exhaust pressure but rather using exhaust pressure to create a venturi effect then you'll be good. Its all in the angle

Doesn't matter what angle you try. If you put it in the pyro probe bung on the downpipe right after the turbo, you will always get positive pressure into the crankcase. If you are determined to mount it in the exhaust, then near the tailpipe is better. Personally I would not, but it's my truck and I can do what I want with it

What I've seen before is that the bung must be welded in at something like the 45 degree angle in the pic below.

I have mine into the exhaust just like the diagram above. It works good. I have mine mounted just before the bed. You'll be able to see the puffs of smoke out of the tailpipe.

Pocket- I didnt state to put the tube on the EGT bung, i meant to install a pipe in the exhaust pipe to make a the venturi effect. I gurantee it dosnt work in the EGT bung cause that angle would be taking on pressure. lol, I have a little more brains then that, just a little....

Steve, I would think that it would be best to get a little further downstream from the downpipe and get into your 5-inch system. You'll still have plenty of velocity to induce a vacuum and less chance of so much pressure that you pressurize the CCV.

I agree. I was gonna run my tube into the exhaut right at the last bend in the pipe out the back. This should produce enough vac-u-suck to pull the fumes outta the crank case.

You didn't, but the original poster did ask that. Which is why I answered like I did so there would be no confusion. All these posts about it's ok to put it in the exhaust as long as you have a venturi, but no one said not to put it in the downpipe. Venturi or not, mounting in the downpipe will always cause a pressurized crankcase.

Mine just go down by the lower driveshaft, i have never seen oil driping from it on the ground. It sometimes will show smoke coming out of my wheel well. Best spot i belive since international vents them the same way.
