Ok, I am rebuilding my stock turbo. I should have the shaft/compressor wheel back from being balanced early next week.
I have read about turbo "break in".. By this what do you mean? what is the max psi i should let it run at? and for how long should i baby it?
From the Garrett website:
How should I break in a turbo?
A properly assembled and balanced turbo requires no specific break-in procedure. However, for new installations a close inspection is recommended to insure proper installation and function. Common problems are generally associated with leaks (oil, water, inlet or exhaust).
When I broke-in my rebuilt Van Turbo, I kept it below 10psi for 300 miles. I also refrained from quick spool ups and quick spool downs. I also kept the ETGs below 1000 for those 300 miles. That's just me.
I followed the same basic procedure as Rampage after I rebuilt my van turbo. Boost under 10 psi for the first 100-200 miles, then under 15 until I hit 500 miles on it. After that, I pretty much let it rip.
Prior to installing it on the pedestal, turn it upside down and use an oil squirt can to fill the bearing with oil and spin the compressor wheel to insure the bearing is well oiled. Never install it dry and just start the engine!
