speed density mods

I have recently installed a rebuilt engine in my 93 f150 ext cab 4x4 (e4od). IT has the following mods: cyl heads are DOOE (1970 )ported gasket matched intake and opened up exhaust ,Mac shorty equal length headers, camshaft is 202 @.050 int& exh 112 lda 448 lift, stock y pipe to 3 inch exhaust with a flowmaster muffler. The lower manifold was opened up slightly around the intake openings to smooth the flow but could only be done a limited amount due to its size. The engine runs ok but doesnt have any more power than the old smoker it replaced.
I have thought about replacing the fuel reg with an ajustable or the injectors with 24 lb units to boost fuel. A custom burn chip may work but I have heard mixed results and I dont actually know of any one personly that has tried it. have even thought about scraping the fuel injection for a carb but I have been told the E40d trans wont work properly . Anyone who has experience with this and could lend some advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks for the advice, Im trying to get a better understanding of how they work (chips) before I make a choice. Every buck has got to count at this point. I would possibly consider a blower in the next few months if thats what it takes to get this thing movin.

You could just have ken burn you a custom chip from this site.

I dont know how much better the DOOE heads flow, but if im not mistaken, your cam is just a little bit bigger than stock. I think the mass air 5.0's in the trucks were running around 200 degrees intake? Not sure on that. I know that when mass air was added to the trucks in roughly 94' for the 5.0, they recieved a more agressive cam. First check and make sure everything is tuned appropriately. All sensors are working top noch. I have heard of a few setups that are a little more built than yours running just fine on speed density even without a chip. However, it does require more knowledge and time than I have. If, after everything is for sure tuned appropriately, you my want to go with a mass air setup. I have heard they can be quite expensive for trucks with the E4OD, but a chip is a hit and miss. It's really guestimating how much air is going into your freshly modified engine since no one is there to actually measure it like a mass air meter would. Yeah, the O2 sensor can pick up on a little of that, but not a big difference. A blower is a nice idea but would also require alot more tuning capability. Hopefully someone else will jump on this and help you out.

Sounds like a good plan to have it analized, made an apointment for saturday . I will let you know how it goes, the dooe heads have 1.84 int and 1.54 ex with 60cc chambers. Aso put on a ajustable fuel reg and boosted the press to 45psi did notice a little more top end .also tail pipe has got alittle bit of soot on it now. I probably should stop bootin it around testing power still using a bit of oil I gues the rings havnt seated yet thought I saw some smoke to, not sure if thats normal on a 200 mile engine.

Thanks.

What do your plugs look like now? The spark plug can tell you an amazing amount of stuff about how your motor's running and it's also a lot cheaper than having it 'professionally' inspected.

i think it is going to be tough to get the results you seek because speed density does not recognize modifacations,it is a closed loop system.your best bet is to convert to mass air system

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-Dec-02 AT 09:47 PM (EST)]the mods you did will work fine with the stock speed density and 19# injectors, ported heads and all. The speed density system will accept an aftermarket camshaft as long as the idle vacuum is very close to what the stock motor had. The 19#ers will work fine for what the speed density will accept. A chip wouldn't hurt either, but its alot cheaper to advance your timing at the distributor, and your computer will have already compensated for the fuel it needs.:-X12

I have heard mixed things as well about mass air and keeping speed density but also have read stuff as well either to keep it or not.But i agree with v10klzz71s that speed density was set up for that stock motor and that is all it knows but you said the motor has recently been rebuilt but you did not say if it was bored out.Or maybe i missed something. The heads probaly make a little more power for you and the cam helped out and the port matched intake was not a bad idea either but if that computer dont know it what does it matter.I would definetly think about the mass air conversion seriously.I used pro-flow.Just my 2 cents (please excuse my spelling I am just a good old boy with puter in his house)

im making 500 rwhp and close to 550ftlbs on eec4 SPEED DENSITY. my truck is supercharged with a stock ford longblock...thats right...stock heads, cam and bottom end. tuning is done through a chip. mass air is a waste unless the cam choice is way radical. the best route to go is to do your mods... and get a chip made on a dyno. it will be cheaper than mass air and more accurate. even if a dyno is not readily available...any good ford chip maker can make a program that will be pretty dead on. 11.74 @ 113.....mass what? check the sig
