I have a 96 F250 with a 460. It has an E4OD and 4.11 gears. I am pretty sure the previous owner had a shift kit put in and did something to make the engine run cooler. Its primary purpose is for towing our travel trailer. It is a California truck so it has MAF. What are my options for performance mods. I pulled open the air intake to look for the "silencers", but there was nothing there.
My plan:
K&N filter
tune-up (will six litre tune help?)
Cat back exhaust
Headers (if I can find some Cali legal)
What advantages does the MAF give me? Are there any tuning options? Any and all opinions are welcome and greatly appreciated.
In California aftermarket cats are illegal. Only OEM cats. A tuner is your best bet IMHO. Your really limited in California if you need to smog every two years. I'm a former holder of a Class A California Smog license. I have a friend who is currently licensed in Sacramento & he keeps updated. With a tuner you can set it back to stock for smog.

I think there is a guy on this forum that sells & builds custom tuners SCT tuners I think. Ask on the 385 board. Other than that check the internet for tuners for your 460. The guys on the V-10 board use his stuff.

That I'm not sure about. I would go online to the California B.A.R (Bureau of Automotive Repair) Look up the exhaust system. See what they say. You could call them but good luck there. The other option is to go talk to a speed shop in your area & see what they say. Where in California are you. The other thought is do you know anyone you can use their address to register your truck where every two years isn't required. My wife works in Mono County CA & I know several areas from Riverside Co up the eastern part of the State only require a one time smog.
