Which Type of Performance Mods?

I own a e-450 chassis with 7.3 turbo. 2003 Model. Modifying it and installing a cab extension and 06 Dually pick up bed.

Want to haul my gooseneck flat bed. I have installed a 4 inch exhaust system and want a performance chip mod.

Also planning on a air intake mod as well.

Looking to improve fuel economy and performance, Middle of the road. Not racing and don't want to toast the engine...it has 135K miles on it right now.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Jon

Welcome to FTE, and but of course we have sugggestions...we like spending others money...

Now for the real answers,

Since you are doing this for towing, do you have a budget you are working to?
Gages would be the first suggestion, allows you to watch trans temp, EGT's, and Boost. Just to keep you in a safe working area.
Your air intake, I would suggest a simple 6637 mod, you can buy the whole thing for I think 65.00 from Riffraff diesel, it is worth it. Although, you may find excessise Turbo whistle from it being an open element, if this is hte case, check into the Fords Air intake system, about 300.00.
This is why I am asking for the budget, our trans sucks.. so you may want to start wiht a trans, BTS, JW, or even the new Heavy trans from Ford, if not, then do your self a favor and get a Valve Body.
Once this is all done, it is time to play with your tuners, Most off the shelf units require gages of some sort, this is why I asked for you to go after gages first, IMHO, I would suggest the Custom Tuners, PHP's the, sorry drawing a blank on the rest of them, I prefer the DP. Call and speak to them, or their reps, tell them what it is you plan on doing with the truck, let them know about your intake, your exhaust, and the weight you are planning on, they will set you up with what you need.

Hope this helps.. and good luck!!

I would get a Built trans first and foremost especially since you are specifically towning with it. and of course Gauges.

after that I would get ahold of a custom tuner, If you are wanting to do anything else to let them know. They will point you in the right Directions.

Well, I hope this helps,

Here is the AFE systemhttp://www.riffraffdiesel.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=RRD&Product_Co de=54-10061&Category_Code=F731-IN-AFE,

And the the 6637 Riffraff Diesel: RDP 6637 Filter Kit

you can see the 6637 is an open element, with no cover, that is why you will hear it more.

Here is the trans I was refering to Brians Truck Shop

and also the John Woods John Wood Automotive - Home

Now tuners, THis is who I run, and the customer service is fantastic Diesel tuning products for Ford PowerStroke,

The other popular one is PHP Power Hungry Performance - Feed your hunger for POWER!

Also, before I forget, BTS tunes, I think, so that may be an option for you.

Now, to make it easy for you, Riffraff is as Cheap as it gets for buying Performance parts, Riffraff Diesel

I hope this helps. Have Fun!!!

With the van turbo you already have the larger wxhaust housing so that is good to keep EGT's down with your exhaust. Is this van intercooled. I didn't think the vans were.
