My 99' pulls my FJ40 far better than my 460 ever did. Not as good as the 6.0 but I will take realibility over a bit more power anyday. I would like to upgrade to a newer 6.8 four door.
And this platform is quiter and more comfortable in every way compared to the old truck. And I get better fuel economy.
Why are we talking about this anyway?
There are still some used V10 for sale. I search every now and then. I see V10s around here quite a bit from now from 99'-08' models and they are all on the road and not for sale.
I can see this thread really grew while I was away on vacation towing my 12,000 lbs of trailer over steep, long grades from below sea level to 10,000 ft mountains in Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and California.
I have towed with an old 4.9 I-6, 460 4bbl, 5.4 Triton, and am on my second V10. The V10 never makes me fear it will come apart when it starts revving over 3 grand. It just purrs right along. She keeps up with the best of them. I topped long 6 and 7% under 5,000 feet elevation and still was going 50 mph. At higher elevations I got her down to 40 on similar grades. All in blistering desert heat up to 118º!!!
Oh, and it does not use a drop of oil. I have had the truck 5 years and have done this every year. I will take that V10 over anything I have previously towed with.
whoever has around the 2000 year f-350 or excursion with 4.30 gears please post me your vin. Mine is the srw, maybe this is the difference in gear options, I noticed most of you say you have the drw with the 4.30's.
The dude with the excursion pulling the big time loads, yours is the same year as mine and you say you got the 4.30's. I would appreciate your vin cause the ford dealers hear say these gears are not an option for my truck and the gear center in town say the 4.30's may be an option but are unavailable except through ford.
thanx.

The Excursion either came with 3.73:1 or 4.30:1 unless it was a V8 and then it had the 4.10:1 gear as an option instead of the 4.30:1.
I'll try to get my VIN for you soon. Too tired to go outside again tonight.
Please do post your vin when you get a chance, that would be great cause I would like to do the gear change soon, before next camping trip. Oh, and just to stir the pot a little for POPS there that was away on holidays.... my 75 ford F250 came with 3.73 gears and I also have 285/75R16 tires on it. Once again, only a cam change and timing chain and the sucker pulls like an ox on steroids. motor has an original 130,000 miles on it and never had any other work done to it. So, aside from the weight difference from one truck to another(witch is not enough of an excuse) the old 460 does the job better, put some 4.30s behind the old beast and look out buddy. And yes it gets very hot in the summer when I'm pulling too.
I have owned 3 RV's since 2007 up to my current 37' 2010 Georgetown and have had the 2V and 3V V10's. The V-10 is a beast and will smoke any old 460 at low RPM's or High. I pull an HHR behind the RV with total GVW of 22K! NO Problems.
Based on this thread the production V-10 (particularly the 3V version) is a far superior engine to the production 460. Hands Down.
Waaaaaaaaaay Smoother
Better Low & High End Torque
Better Fuel Economy
Longer life (Even though it cranks up higher RPM's)
It is easy to say if you did this or that to the 460 it woould be a better engine but where is the proof? At what cost? new heads, intake, MPFI etc...scrap it and remember it for what it was and when it was great.
So what can you do to make the V-10 even better??
I installed the Banks exhaust, intake and chip and got slightly better milage and about 30-50hp. Not a huge difference based on the cost but it runs cooler and make a little more power down low keeping me in higher gears on hills. I'm pleased.
So I decided to try the tuner from 5 star tunning. And I have to admit, what a difference. Makes me feel like the truck might be worth keeping. If it still does not pull the trailer like it should then I think I will put in the 4.30 gears.
Some of you guys are kinda funny, telling me to forget the 460 cause you gotta mod it and work on it, who wants to do that when you can just hook up and go, right? But here I am contemplating laying on the floor for a number of hours, spending a considerable amount of money doing a gear swap. What the hell was ford thinking when they put 3.73s in a 1 ton truck anyway. Did they think I only wanted to haul my dirt bike?
Yeah 3.73s are terrible gears for the gassers, I think the illusion of better mpg was the reason behind the 3.73 option.
5 Stars towing tune works great. I usually run the 87 Perf in mine and switch over to the 87 tow when towing, quite a difference. My dad won't shut up about how great the towing tune is on his truck.

Well some of us get our 'one tons' to haul alot in the bed, and you really dont need 4.30s to haul 3 or 4k do you? I probably would have went 3.73's if they were available but believe it or not in more recent years Ford did make it so you could only get 4.10 or up in the V10. Funny thing you could still get 3.73 with the 5.4L, which to me sounds like they intended for it to be for better mpg . That being said my cousin drove a 5.4/3.73 SD and hauls his big goosneck and tractors and such all over the place. Said he always wanted a diesel but took almost 10 years to finally get one (just got a left over 09). He said you wouldnt win any races but it did fine.
My bro-in-law is still one who beleives the 460 was far stronger, claims the V10 he drove was 'all gas and no ***' as he says. I'd love for us to have a little pulling competition some day but last winter some little car driving too fast around an icy corner redecorated his front end (they were both prolly going around 30mph). He never wears his seatbelt (and she wasnt either) so thankfully they werent ejected but he did bend the steering wheel and they put two headprints into the windshield. The other driver was taken away by ambulance but was ok I think. He still has the truck but the frame and front end are a tad bit tweaked. It was a nice truck, I forget the year but ut was the 87-91 style lariat extended cab long bed dually 460. He is a farmer that beats his stuff to death quickly... only one I know that trashed two rear axles in one year.
I still prefer the 460 over the v10 any day. The v10 may tow more, but the 460 will pull anything as well. The mileage will suck but I think the 460 is much more reliable because the v10s are notorious for blowing gaskets.
Just saying I think the 460 deserves more credit than it is given, because we all know that the 460 is one of the best engines ever built by Ford.
I'm not sure what you mean about the 460 deserving more credit... its been given great credit for decades and is one of the most common engine swaps, for older trucks atleast. From my experience its the V10 that isnt given enough credit...
