My 2000 F350 V10 uses an average of 5 quarts every 3000 miles, and runs fine. I just replaced my exhaust studs and gaskets and the exhaust ports were clean. Figure that out! But, I guess I won't worry till it fouls a plug.
if your useing 5 qts every 3k something is wrong and you should be throwing a super sized bug killing cloud behind you . beside fouling plugs left and right or leaving a major puddle on the ground when you park. so i hope you mean 1 qt per 3k.
rusty you need to get used to a major true fact! every motor made uses some oil. if it didn't we would have burned/seized pistons and rings left and right.
that used oil is the by product of cylinder wall lubercation. those very fine lines or hone marks in the cylinder wall hold the oil that lets the piston and rings slide up and down with oue seizing up. what gets pushed up by the rings to the combustion chamber gets burned in the combustion process. that is what we see when checking the stick.
normal useage guaged by every car and truck marker is normal when the amount is 1 qt per 1k at min. we have no way of stopping this and if we did NO MOTOR EVER MADE would run any longer then a very few minits before it seized up rock solid.
No. When I said I use about 5, (FIVE), quarts EVERY 3k, (THREE THOUSAND), I Meant it. And as I said, it DOES NOT!!! foul plugs, or smoke. And no, It doesn't leak an ounce! I would also agree that something is wrong, but, It has been doing this for 60,000 miles.
While I've had a few vehicles over the years only 3 were brand new. An '89 Kawasaki Vulcan VN750-A5, a '93 F150XL w/ 4.9L inline 6 and now my '06 V10. I guess back then I never questioned oil consumption, and never checked for it until it was time to change the oil and filter. And even at that point I never measured for oil loss.
Now that I'm older, and really care about this truck, I perhaps check things out a little more than I used to. And was surprised when I did notice oil loss over the life of an oil change on the dip stick.
Reading what you and others have said has put my mind at ease. I've gotten used to it, and understand the reason for it more than I did a few months ago.
Thanks for your words of wisdom, still diggin the forum.
It was a great bike, quick up to 80mph (for a cruiser), comfortable on long trips, hated to see it go when the kids were born. Needed the money, wifey says I can get another, the kids support the idea too. We'll see, still payin on the V10.
I came across this article on Oil Consumption and recalled this thread - so I thought I'd post it up while I was thinking about it.
Ford's "Motorhome Chassis Service Manual" notes that vehicles over 8,500 pounds GVWR should go at least 900 miles per quart of oil, but that vehicles subject to severe duty may use more oil.
My 2002 V10 w/60k miles uses the same, I use Mobile 1 synthetic. Before that I used conventional oil, still consumed some. The tolerances in the engine must just allow for oil consumption, mine runs like a champ. I check the oil before every long trip we take just to make sure.
I don't want my baby to break especially since they don't make em anymore!
My V-10 equipped 2003 E350, now at 112K on the clock, uses about 1qt per 4K/3mo OCI. I run FoMoCo semi-synth 5w20 with Mobil1 filters. I whole-heartedly agree that some loss is due to evap, and some is "normal" consumption, because the pattern of usage hanged since the truck is sitting, sometimes for a week at a time. It's not "burning" it, and it doesn't leak, so, QED, it must be a combination of evap and use.
My 2000 with 84k miles and 4.30 gears will use a quart in 2500 - 3000 miles. It has been very consistent with this since I got it with 63k on the odometer. It gets 5W-30 Valvoline every 3k, sometimes it will need a quart before I can change it, most times I just go ahead and change it if it is getting close.
I agree that all engines must use a small amount of oil to be lubed properly. My lowest usage vehicle ever was the '94 F-250 with 5.8l that I had prior to the V-10. It would show just a few ounces down after 3k.
I appologize its been awhile since my last post so I thought I take the opportunity to weigh in on this one. I experianced the same oil consuption as most of you with my old 2001 2V (157K when retired but still running strong). That being about 1/2 to 1 quart about every 3-4K. And like many of you synthetics such as Mobil 1 and Syntec seemed to only increase the problem. When I purchased my '06 V10 CC 4x4 I followed my Dad's advise about a pretty regimented break-in period. He was an engineer for Shell Oil back in the 80's. I dropped the oil at 250, 750, 1500 and finally at 3000 before at leveling off at 4000 mile intervals. The idea here being to let the rings set in with a reasonable amount of fresh FoMoCo semi synthetic to lubricate them as well as all the other oil bathed and injected parts in the engine. The second part of the equation was do I switch to full synthetics since I use them in all of my toys and except the excessive "burn off" and evaporation I experianced in my '01. I finally made the jump to "full syn" at 23K and started using Penzoil Platinum 5w20 (pretty reasonable at Wally World). I religiously change the oil between 4000 5000 miles. I don't see a big performance drop off at the end of the interval that I noticed with many "conventionals" years ago. Best of all I have zero oil loss with this motor. Adding to my 7 year amazement with the mighty V10, I just returned from a 3300 mile round trip from Seattle to Phoenix and my oil level is dead on the scribed mark I put on my dipstick 2 years ago. Oh and I was pulling a 30' 8500lb Wellcraft aluminum cuddy with 2-175 SeaPros on the transom to boot.
Oh by the way, seeing the double takes out my passenger window from the "sooters" when taking on the big grades of I-90, I-82, I-84 and US93 were just pricless.
