Mines always used a little oil from day one. About a quart between changes if I'm running alot of in town.Mostly highway, not so much. Don't sweat it if it's only a quart every 3k or so.

I bought my 2003 V10 back in May with 30k miles on it. I changed the oil the day I brought it home. I used a standard Fram filter and Castrol Syntec 5W-30. Around 33k miles I noticed I was down a little more than a quart. In all honesty, I never checked the dip stick the day I changed the oil. I just put in the 6 quarts and figured it would be full, perhaps 6 quarts doesn't actually fill it all the way? Next time I will be checking. I can't help but think that the oil useage is because I should have used 5W-20. Amyway, I'm using 5W-20 now and at 35k miles now and I had to pour in the remainder of the second quart. 2 quarts in 5k miles seems a bit high to me.

oil usage

My 5.4 liter 2000 model x has always used about a qt. every 1000 miles. I was not happy with it doing so. I asked my mechanic who said his F150 did the same thing since it was almost new! He says he can live with it I guess I can too.

Mine now has 123k Miles on it and other than that, has been trouble free. Pulls good, mileage ok, so I run on.

All V10s use oil. In fact, every engine on the market uses oil. Some engines even burn it (diesel). You need oil to lubricate & cool the engine...... oh wait...you didn't mean it that way did you?

My previous V10 would only use oil when I ran Mobil1. With Motorcraft 5w-20...nothing. SO I always used MC oil after that.

I just put Royal Purple 5W-20 full synthetic in my current V10 and will see if it, too, evaporates or burns or whatever happens to synthetic oil in these engines. Seems most report synthetic goes "faster" than semi-synth' or dino oil.

But if you check it more than twice you're playing with it.

I found my v-10 seemed to use a lot of oil at the last oil change. After the change I looked for leaks and found the oil filter leaking. I tightened the filter and I think the leak is fixed. On other vehicles 3/4 turn after gasket contact has been fine, but my EX seems to need 1 full turn.
