V10 Excursion Oil usage

Merry Christmas all.

What is the normal oil consumption for the 2000 V10's. I have owned mine since it had 40k and now has 109K on it. I never abused it, drive it mostly in the winter and the bike in the summer. This truck is using qt every 500 miles roughly. Using Motorcraft oil. That has been the best results. What has anyone found with them. I am a engine builder. Have never had one of the V10s apart. I would like to know why owners never try to modify them. Head work or cams? Never hear anything about that.
Have a great holiday.

Try replacing the PVC valve first. Does it smoke when you start it up? Mine has 180k on it and it was using oil at about the same rate as yours. I swapped the PVC valve and that has reduced it's usage to a half a quart in ~1000 miles. I don't drive mine that much (it's my jeep tow rig) so I really don't care - just gotta keep a close eye on the oil level.

I run Mobil 1 in mine as well and don't see that level of oil consumption. I change every 3000 miles and am usually down about a 1/4 of a quart. That is with 75k miles on it right now. Have you noticed any oil leaks or anything?

PCV X2 - Check it. That could be the consumption problem. They get gummed up and stick open.

1 quart every 500 miles?? Thats bad!! I would suggest valve seals and check the compression on each cylinder. I dont know if the PVC valve would cause your engine to burn that much oil. My 2000 X has 140K and uses no oil at all. Well start checking her out and let us know what you find.

I have a 2000 v10 F250 108000 I use two quarts every 3500 miles it has done that since mile one. No leaks no smoke. going some were but not causing any trouble. On your hand evey 500 miles seems to be alot next time you get to the ad mark try going another 500 and see if you end up two quarts low may sound messed up but some motors like to run one quart low they will hit that mark then stay there if you try that just keep an eye on your level.

Sounds like my SIL's V10 Ex. Will do fine for about 2500 miles and after that it drops about 3 quarts. It old them about the PCV and switching to synthtics. I may switch start to run a full synthtic in our 5.4 although it only loses about a quart every 3k.

No loss of oil in our '02 Limited. We run Mobil 1 Syn, change every 5K. HOWEVER, I have an intermittent "stumble" on light acceleration, but no codes are being thrown. I know its a power pack going, but the OBD1 computer isn't registering a problem.

Ouch....and I thought going through a quart every 1000 miles on my 2000 Ex was a lot...

I have run 5W20 synth. since I bought mine with 17k on it. it now has 57k on it and has never used a drop of oil! even towing through the mtns.! I als would check the PVC valve.

As far as performance goes, check out the price of a set of cams for the V-10 ?????? the best thing would be a supercharger setup if you can find a good used one!

IMHO I really don't think anyone has an engine that doesn't burn any oil. An engine that tight wouldn't last very long for sutained use. Your's however is excessive.

A bad PCV will cause any engine to use oil and it doesn't have to be visibly gummed up to be bad. Changing it is inexpensive and painless so I would start there. I think that will probably help with your issue.

Otherwise - the V10 is a known oil burner. As someone mentioned the 6.8 can burn oil from day one. For the oil change every 3000 mile crowd they probably never even notice. For the 5000 mile change people it will be noticeable.

Re spark plugs - Motorcraft only and I would stay with standard plugs. Search and you will find many reasons why. I personally have tried other plugs and ended up pulling them immediately. Unless you really like changing plugs I would stay with the proven brand and design.

If you change the PCV and you are still guzzling oil you probably have another issue going on.

Performance for a V10 = Kenne Bell. Premium fuel only then.

Good luck.

I had looked very briefly at blowing the V10 a few years ago...a local shop had a blower that would bolt on and could do the work...the problem was two fold.

1) Premium fuel after that
2) I was worried about how the 4R100 trans would handle the extra power and had reliability concerns...

I have to admit though...the combo would be killer!

As far as oil "usage"...mine has always used some between oil changes...maybe 1 qt per 2000 miles or so and I use Mobile1...I have never seen drips or smoke so it is a slow usage...yours at 1 qt per 500 miles has to either be leaking (visual) or smoking (again visual)???

Good luck,
Joe.
