V10 Oil usage

What is common amount of oil between changes? I change oil ever 3k. I have a 2000 w/ 60k and uses oil. Can't see it comming out the pipes or in the coolant. I have gone to syntec to help but that did nothing. I don't beat on it and drive on the highway everday. Have not pulled anything with it yet. Time for a overhaul??
What has everybody seen out there with the V10's? I have been building and racing FORDs for 37 years and never seen anything like this.
Thanks
Jim

how much is it useing? plus you need to remember the emission comtrols do make them use a little bit. a qt in 2 or 3k i would not worry.
plus from what you say about building race engines your around a long time also so you under stand emissions controls and the line item known as HEAT burn off.

96k and it looks like none used so far. I'm using motorcraft 5w-20 syn blend. I changed it shorty after I got the truck and this is the first oil change coming up in about 600miles. I changed the oil around Halloween. Almost 6 months and under 3k. I guess I don't drive my daily driver alot, but it's nice to see it isn't an oil sucking slob.

Try sticking the dipstick in different. I had a 4.6 I swore was sucking oil bad!Turned out then. It mattered which way i shovel the dipstick down. If it was turned one way it read low and other times it was fine. Every oil change looked to be all of 6qts in the drain pan. It was annoying.

With Mobil 1, I used about 1 qt every 5k. With MC 5W-20, less than half that. Some is due to evaporation and different oils hold up better than others in that area.

About a liter every 3-4 k on my 99. But since I change it every 3500k I usually never add any.

The truth about oil burn(or think its oil burn)
Synthetic's at least in my expierence seems to disappear easier than dino does
It vaporises and will get reburned in the PCV system.
Chk your PCV valve and hose ,I bet you will find oil in the tube.
Keep the PCV valve new ,some of the useage will not happen.

James - how much oil are you losing in 3K? If it's about a quart, that seems to be the norm. If you have 4.30 gearing and trying to stay up with the traffic, that may be it.

Some of us have tried different types of oils and have found that synthetic oils go away faster than dino, like Rich is talking about. Some of us go 3K with dino and don't lose a drop.

Mine uses about 1/2 qt every 3000. I have always been told some consumption is a good thing. I went researching and this is what I found on the subject:
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>
All cars consume SOME oil. They have to. If they don't, they'll suffer an early demise. Valve guides and seals have to be oiled, and by definition, that means that oil will be consumed in the engine. Cylinder sleeves and piston rings need lubrication as well. A small amount of oil is consumed during each engine revolution. It has to be...or the engine will need rebuilding in short order.

This is called "total loss" oiling, and, as Titan said, will typically show up more under higher RPM/duty cycles. More revolutions = more oil lost. Just a function of modern 4-valve engines (and 4 valves will consume more oil than 2 valves) and the tendency to tune for higher (RPM) power peaks.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>

A little oil consumption is a good thing.. Sometimes as much as a quart every 2-3k miles. But the side benefit of that is when you tear into one 200k miles down the road, you can still see the aggressive cylinder hone pattern, and there's NO cylinder ridge at the top of the cylinder.

We used to associate "no oil consumption" with good performance, but that was back when you had to rebuild an engine after 100k miles, because the cylinders had wore slick smooth (and you had to really grind that ridge down). I'd much rather have to add a quart or two over an OCI than wear an engine out due to cylinder wall wear.

Shortly after I started using Mobil 1, I went through a quart on the drive from Fredericksburg VA, to Venice FLA. And another quart on the way home. It used more when towing the 3770lb Pop Up, but really didn't seem to make much of difference when unloaded.

When I switched back to Motorcraft I thought the oil consumption issue would change. It did not, I'm using about a 1/2 qt for every 1500miles traveled. So I would say I'm using about 1 1/2 qts over a 5000 mile oil change interval. To me this is totaly unacceptable. But from what I've been reading about other manufacturers engines, this is not at all uncommon. Go figure.

Yeah Rusty I agree but I think 1qt. per 1000 miles is acceptable to all makes.

A lot of people worry about "oil usuage" - but is it really usuage? A lot of it is evaporation. I wouldn't worry about it as long as the engine is running good and its not blowing somke out the tail pipe.

My old V10 (2000 with 85K when sold) would use a quart of mobile one every 1,000mi-1,500mi. Ran fine, just sucked down oil fast.
