Leaking fuel from separator

Wondering if anyone else may have come across this problem. My '00 F250 PS started leaking fuel from the separator today. I've replaced the fuel filter twice in 70K miles, but is the filter bypass through the separator? Yes, the separator is closed and I drain the separator every oil change. I plan on changing the fuel filter with every oil change instead of going by the manual. Any ideas what is causing this?

Thanks,
Jim

Is it leaking from the lid area? Chances are the rubber ring that seals it is not in place properly. I will usually take a strap wrench like the kind you use to take off the oil filter and tighten it with that to make sure I get it sealed all the way.

Leaking fuel from separator

Fuel is dropping right out of the separator drain with the separator drain valve closed? Bad drain valve? The filter lid is not leaking. I have an extension hose on the separator drain that drops the fuel below the frame when draining the separator, also makes it easy to see where the fuel leak is coming from in this case.

Thanks,
Jim

Leaking fuel from separator

Talked to a friend that had the same problem on his '99 F250 PS. Trash had accumulated around the separator drain valve and caused the valve not to shut completely. He had the dealer fix the problem, they replaced the valve assembly, parts and labor around $120. The dealer recommended more frequent fuel filter changes to keep the valve clean.

Anyone know if this valve can be cleaned and reinstalled?

My guess would be that if it can be taken off the truck , I am sure it could be cleaned and re-installed...

funny you should mention the fuel leak. My 1999 SD F-250 just started leaking again now that the weather started getting colder. It's coming right from the tube that you drain the water from. Not sure what to do. I guess I'll have to take the valve apart and find out what is worn out. Only have 85000 miles on it.

Leaking fuel from the separator, I have found out, just means you need to change your fuel filter more often. When you open the separator valve to drain water some trash or dirt is getting into the valve and preventing it from shutting off. I have started changing my fuel filter every other oil change and the problem has gone away.

I'm sure there are other conditions or reasons for a leaking separator, but this is what I have found.
