If you hook the stock reverse light circuit to terminal 87a (center) it is normally closed on a SPDT Bosch-type relay. Then you would not have to use the diode. The lights will come on with the regular back-up lights. If you energize the relay with your dash switch, the power then would come from your separate fused source.
Great find, and good install. I am just pointing out a way to simplify it for others.
Just did the both light mods(minus under-carriage). They are awsome. I did the reverse first. I looked and checked forever on the reverse light wire in the cab. Ended up doing a majority of the hookup at the tail light. Relay, diode, reverse splice. looks sharp. Then tackled the bed lights. Easy to find that wire. Black with Lt. blue stripe. Bed lights were all in cab hookup. All off rocker switches. Thanks Bear Hunter.
I am looking at these too. I will prob just use the switch inside since I don;t want them on all the time when I back up. Trying to back up a RV with these one would be a handful.
I have read this post from start to finish as I am about to do the same set up as Bear Hunter. I have all of the supplies. I have one question though. The switch for in the cab, how many wires need to be run to that? My switch had 3 prongs behind it, 1 gorund, 1 load, 1 for power. How do I wire this up? I just tried it in the garage using my boat battery, and I cant figure it out. If i wire direct though the switch with out using relay (likes Bear's set up) the lights light up.
Any help with the switch portion would be great. I'm gonna tackle this as soon as rain stops up here.
I didn't run a relay. I just used it direct and I turn them one when I need them. The reason for 3 pronges on your switch is so it lights up when you flip the switch.
ground it, then run hot wire from battery to supply on switch then run another wire to the lights from the third pronge.
I just re read the posts. Bear has on one of his posts, that when using the switch the power to the switch has to be wired into the "Key" i'm assuming thats when you turn the ignition key on, it will power the switch. How would i go about wiring it like that? where do I get the power from? do I run a second fused line form the battery right to switch or can I get power from the fuse block?
MXdad, thanks for the input, but i want them to come on in reverse as I plow and could use the xtra light in the back. my windows are tinted pretty good so its tough to see.
i remember a few years ago, they did a set up similar to this on shade tree mechanic. it wasn't near as slick as this one! i want some like it, truck and all!
Just run the hot wire directly to the reverse lights and ground the other to the truck frame. You should not need a relay for just two lights.
It's kind of hard to figure out who is replying to who on this. But if you wire those two lights directly to the trucks backup light circuit, you DO need a relay IMO. The Ford wiring for that circuit is very small.
