It had no shifting or driving issues. Then suddenly one day both drive and reverse stopped working from a stop. Trying either from a stop and the transmission just slips. It tries to move forward but can't.
If I put it in second gear, it will get up to speed and then I can shift into drive. From there I can feel the transmission shift without a problem and can get up to normal road speeds.
The check engine light is on and the OD Off light comes on when it gets shifted into drive at speed. The OD light stays steady and doesn't blink.
The auto parts store checked the codes it was throwing and the there was one for poor presure on shifting solenoid c - which a google search tells me is shifting soleniod 3.
I dropped the pan today to take a look. There was no metal in the pan or on the catch magnet and the fluid wasn't burned. I can see where the shifting soleniod 3 is but I wouldn't mind some idea how to replace it before I start pulling bolts out. I can't find any videos or discussions that talk about this repair.
Also, it would be good to hear if others have fixed the same problem by replacing shifting soleniod 3. Is is too simple to think I only have to swap out the shifting soleniod?
Thanks for any advice!
Peter
If you have no reverse or drive but will engage in low or 2nd this is a indication of a failed input sprag. This can happen without warning and not create much debris.
I also have a tutorial available for the infamous " valve body " gasket. click the following link

Thanks

I tried disconnecting the shifter cable and manually shifting the tranny. It clicks through all positions but doesn't change gears.
Any ideas out there?
If the problem came about suddenly after some event, check line pressure & if none, suspect a pump problem.
A couple of thoughts for consideration, let us know what you find
Hello,
I have looked over most all of the forum posts about trans issues with the ranger rand mine seems a bit strange.
No flashing OD light, no OBD codes.
Issue: in OD on or OFF while driving at steady throttle from 25 ish to 70 the transmission seems to stumble (feels like you are letting on and of the throttle for a split second) I thought about the TCC solenoid but the symptom is different Feels like a switch turning on and off constantly while driving at a steady speed.
Trans shifts fine up and down its just this annoying fluctuation at a steady throttle position.

Lots of unknowns.
If you have, or can come by the inexpensive ELM scan tool as discussed here, https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-scantool.html & running FORScan or the like software on the viewing device of your choice, have it scan the tranny computer for trouble code clues & post up All trouble code Numbers in a new thread, so you get help just for your problems.
Did the problem come about slowly over time, or suddenly after some event?
Are you using a licensed Mercon V tranny fluid, is it at the proper level as described in the owner manual?
What kind of condition is it presently in/does smell/look/feel ok/how many miles on the present fluid & filter?
How many miles on the vehicle/tranny?
Answers to these questions can begin to steer the forum in suggesting a useful trouble shoot/repair direction.

If all that is ok, check line pressure.
If all that checks out, come by the ELM scan tool & running FORScan on your choice of viewing device, have it take a look at the engine & tranny computers & the GEM for pending code clues. It can take an in depth look at engine & tranny things that can corrupt shift quality.
