Or...you could pick up one of the excellent Savage 99 lever action rifles...these were introduced in 1899 and discontinued several years ago. The 99 features a rotary magazine, is hammerless....and will accept a top mounted scope.
They're durn good lookin', too.
I'd love to find a Savage 99 in good shape.
A buddy of mine wants one in the worst way. Preferably in .243, but, he'd take one in .308, also.
He told me that IF I can find a '99' for him, he'd GIVE me his M1 Garand that he got from the DCM (pre-CMP days)!!!!
(This M1 has been fired maybe 16 shots total, since he got it!)
I asked him to repeat that, and he said that he'd pay for the Savage, but, I had to find the 99 in good shape. The finder's fee would be the Garand.
(And he wants it locally, too!) Around here, that's like finding hen's teeth.
I'd love a Savage 99. I'd want it in 300 savage if possible. I shoot a Browning lever action in 308 now. There are only 3 lever action guns I know of that shoot pointed bullets. Browning ,Winchester & Savage. Winchester & Savage are not built anymore & are prized collector guns. I think the Winchester was brought back on the market a few yrs ago but it didn't sell enough to keep it on the market.I really like my BLR. Most people don't know what it is & think its a 30/30.
I have one Savage 99, the EG model made in 1941 (first yr for checkered pg stock) in 300 Savage...it's about 90%, (not drilled or tapped). I have the Savage 99 softbound ref book which lists all the models, when they were introduced and a serial number dating chart.
Look on the net....I see quite a few still for sale. Good luck finding a pre war TD version, tho.
