To buy a cartridge handgun in CA requires passing a safety written test, and paying $50.00 for a three year permit. You also (are supposed to) own a safe.
This permit allows one to purchase as many handguns as one wishes...but, only one cartridge handgun can be registered every 30 days!
However...anyone over the legal age can purchase a BP cap and ball handgun without ID...and walk out of the store with it the very same day....!
HAHA! All I think I really want is a .22 .243 and a 12 gauge shotgun. But who knows! lol Do you have any pictures of your collection? Im really interested in seeing them!
I do Hopefully you dont think Im hi-jacking your thread...
For your first rifle, a rimfire [.22] is the way to go. Cheap to shoot, and you will want to do lots of it.
Take note of this. It's one of the very few statements that is almost universally agreed upon by rifle shooters (and the ones who don't agree are usually looked at like they've never fired a rifle before in their life). Another one of those statements is: The only way to get good is to shoot, shoot, shoot, then shoot some more.
I would also recommend that you buy the best quality rifle you can afford. Because you're probably going to have it for a long time. For some odd reason very few (I've never met one that does) shooter's ever "trade-up" for a better gun. They simply go out and by a new one, keeping the old ones. I think that's how some folks end up with more guns than a medium sized police force.
Envirocon is right. I've only traded 2 guns in 40 yrs of collecting. My favorite 22 is a old Marlin 39a. Its a lever action & very accurate. Get the best 22 you can afford. They can last a lifetime. I have my first 22 that my dad bought me in 1963. Its a Remington 550a. It will still shoot a group the size of a dime. Shooting is very addictive. I shoot a case of shotgun shells a wk & a couple of bricks of 22s also. Its a great hobby IMHO.
While it is true you can't hunt with a .22, you can with a .223. And you can buy a Ruger Mini 14 in .223 and then get a .22 conversion kit for it and shoot both. The Mini 14 has its fans and detractors, but that will be the next 50 posts...
I'll stick with my S&W Model 500 Mag Handgun! I just love BIG revolvers. Especially ones that'll penetrate the first 4 cylinders of a Ford Straight Six!

Actually there is a lot of states that don't allow hunting with a .223. Would have to check but I believe it's over half the states that don't allow that caliber on deer.
Well CrazySpyder, it's amazing what you can turn up on this site with a simple question isn't it?
WOW! I was thinking the exact same thing. I went away (from fte) for a day or two and came back to 3 pages!
I do NOT care if you hijack my thread at all. This is a gun thread. Talk about guns!
Someone asked what kind of hunting I would do and where at. Well I want to hunt deer and turkey which I THINK I can do with a .243, correct me if im wrong. Eventually I want to go duck hunting. I think that would be loads of fun.
I know I want my first gun to be a rifle. But yall really got me thinking about the .22. But I know I want to go hunting with my first gun and not have to buy a new one to do so.
I also want my gun to be a new one. My girlfriend mentioned buying a used one from cabellas but I decided against it, because my first gun will be MY first gun. Someone also said that when you buy a gun you will keep it. YES!! I will keep it! For a long time at that!
HEY WIZ! Verry verry cool collection! Care to elighten me on what they are? Yes I am a gun noob, and I will admit it!
ATC Crazy- Also verry nice collection. I really like that marlin .22 that you have. Verry cool!

This reminds me that when Bonnie and Clyde met their maker, some of the law used Tommy Guns...Frank Hamer used a Remington Model 8 in .35 Remington, because unlike the .45 ACP, the .35 Rem would penetrate an engine block...(but not do as much damage as a BAR).
The Remington Model 8 and later Model 81 Woodmaster are an excellent example of a rifle that kills on both ends...almost as bad as a Winchester 1895 in either .35WCF or .405WCF with a curved buttplate.
