I use a 22-250 for every thing. Including deer with a 70 grain lead. If I can see horns at 5-600 yards with naked eye. I can put a round just behind his ear and he drops in his tracks. I was hunting with a man using a 243. After his third shot he said if ya can drop him I'l haul him to the road for you. I hit him about an inch under his rack in the back of the skull. We walked it of at about 550 yards. This is a dead on flat shooting hi speed varmint gun and is awesome on Sitka Black Tail.
CrazySpyder, what kind of shooting are going to do? Paper targets? Clay Pigeons? Hunting? Dispatching disgusting varmints? Killing dirt clods or cowpies? I'm just curious. As stated before, it can get very addicting once you get hooked!
I've owned a .243 since I was 13 years old. It's a great all around rifle that's very fun to shoot all day long. There's nothing like a .22 LR rifle or handgun for cheap shooting fun though. You can shoot 500 rounds in a day for about twenty bucks.
Actually the long tom would not be bad to shoot, a gun that long probably weighs 8 or 9 lbs so you would feel less recoil
As long as it's the 12ga version, now the 8ga or possibly even the 10ga is another story especially if it's a double barrel and you pull both triggers at the same time.
For a first gun I sure can't argue with the Marlin 10/22. Where you are in the country & what you are going to use the gun for make a BIG differance.
Oh... and you'll find that a .22 is a LOT quieter too.

yup.... you are right.
But I still LOVE mine & my Marlins too.
And I still think it is about the best first gun anyone could own.
Oh I agree I have a stainless ruger 10/22, as well as a couple of marlin .22s and one marlin .22 mag, and a mossburg .22 bolt action that is the most accurate of all my rim fire rifles and it's 50 yrs old.
