I agree with getting a 22 first for practice. You need to shoot a lot before you start hunting. Don't rule out small game to start on.You can gain valuable hunting experience hunting small game like squirrels & rabbits. You can learn to stalk & to sit quietly which you will need to learn to hunt all game. I'd get a bigger gun than a 243 for deer. I like a 308. It does a good job with little recoil. I'd get a 12 guage for turkey. Most states don't allow rifles for turkey.

I do NOT care if you hijack my thread at all. This is a gun thread. Talk about guns!

Someone asked what kind of hunting I would do and where at. Well I want to hunt deer and turkey which I THINK I can do with a .243, correct me if im wrong. Eventually I want to go duck hunting. I think that would be loads of fun.

I know I want my first gun to be a rifle. But yall really got me thinking about the .22. But I know I want to go hunting with my first gun and not have to buy a new one to do so.

I also want my gun to be a new one. My girlfriend mentioned buying a used one from cabellas but I decided against it, because my first gun will be MY first gun. Someone also said that when you buy a gun you will keep it. YES!! I will keep it! For a long time at that!

HEY WIZ! Verry verry cool collection! Care to elighten me on what they are? Yes I am a gun noob, and I will admit it!

ATC Crazy- Also verry nice collection. I really like that marlin .22 that you have. Verry cool!

I am still looking for a good noob gun forum. Suggestions?

If anyone wants to elighten me a little more my aim screen name is-CrazySpyder69 (duh!)

Thx again all...wow....lol

CrazySpyder,

I've got a few sites for you to check out.

One is "The High Road". I can't post the actual URL from work. We have 'websense' and won't allow it. (Do a search on google. Sorry.)
Another is "Shotgunworld dot com" and "Shootingworld dot com" and "Pistolworld dot com".

These are all GREAT firearms websites.
GOOD bunch of people. They all welcome so-called 'newbies'.

Just remember. . . there are no dumb questions. These sites are a wealth of information, just like FTE. (Although FTE is the BEST site on the internet!)

I will now echo what a lot of others are saying. Get yourself a .22 lr and LOTS of ammo.
There is an expression that fits in this instance. It is: BA/UU/R
That's Buy Ammo / Use Up / Replace.

I for one, have several Ruger 10/22 rifles. However, I will suggest a bolt action .22 lr for a first gun.
1. Bolt action rifles are a bit 'simpler' to use/operate for a person that is new to firearms.
2. Bolt action rifles are a little more accurate, all things considered. (Some will debate this.)
3. Using a bolt action rifle, you will manipulate the action a little slower, so, in turn, you will shoot a little slower, and tend to shoot a little more accurately. (Some tend to believe that with a semi-automatic, you are more prone to 'spray and pray' instead of accurately aiming/firing the rifle.)
My most favorite .22 lr is a Remington model 541-T sporter.
Accuracy is 'top notch'. Absolutely incredible accuracy.

As for the .243. . . it is one fine cartridge for whitetail deer. The .243 is known for good accuracy and very little recoil. It is also 'flat shooting' which means that it is capable of putting projectiles out to longer ranges.
(Conversely, a .45/70 Gov't. round has a 'rainbow' trajectory.)

Thanks for reading.

Keith

And don't forget it's cousin, the Remington .244. Very flat shooting also.

Depends on where your from. In some states you can't hunt with anything smaller then a .243. About the only thing a .22 is good for a plinking and killing tree rats. But if that's all you plan to do then the .22 can't be beat.

This reminds me that when Bonnie and Clyde met their maker, some of the law used Tommy Guns...
Actauly Clyde Barrow was killed with a Winchester lever action. But he had his foot on the clutch and when he was shot he released it and the law men thought he was getting away agian and opened fire with their Colt Monitors(sp?)

I am going between the Ruger KM77RFP MKII .338 and the Weatherby Vanguard Stainless in .338

Wal*Mart used to have them on their website for just under $500...but I cant find them anywhere.

The High Road dot org.

Great bunch of people. Good ideas and 'gentle on newbies' for the most part.
Every site has a few that'll bust your chops, but, it's all in fun.

Actually Clyde Barrow was killed with a Winchester lever action. But he had his foot on the clutch and when he was shot he released it and the law men thought he was getting away agian and opened fire with their Colt Monitors(sp?)
First time I ever heard that...one magazine awhile ago had the names of the lawmen, and the guns used...and as a Winchester lever nut, I don't recall anyone using one....but I hope it's a Model 1895.

Remington Model 8, two Thompson's, a Colt 1911, a BAR, and Rem Model 11 were what (I think) was listed. Hamer took aim at Clyde, but since the bodies and the Ford were so riddled, there was no way to tell who killed whom.

But I'll check out your Winnie report and let you know what I find.

Great post Keith!

I have a Remington 541-TH (Heavy barrel) with a Leupold scope and it's the most accurate .22 I have ever shot. It'll consistently put 5 CCI Stingers in a quarter sized hole at 80 yards. Stingers are not known for accuracy but this rifle just loves the darn things and they just hammer squirrels. Drops 'em like a sack of rocks!

But if you are too lazy to click its a savage .22 lr. I wanted the black but they only had the gray. It was the last one left. $99.99 +tax out the door. Im so happy! My first gun!

Im hoping to get to the gun range soon and have my father in law help me sight it in.

Get a brick (500 rounds) of .22, cleaning equipment and solvent and a case to carry it with.

Get 'er sighted in and then go kill some dirt clods, apples, clay pigeons (set on the ground), etc. Reactive targets make the most fun, and make sure your bride gets in some shooting time. She'll love it and then it's MUCH easier to convince her for your next purchase.

I sure did get the scope. There was a mossberg .22 with out the scope for 120...I said the hell with it and got the .22 savage with scope. Good deal for what ive seen so far on the internet.

And the woman will love it. Shes so happy I got it. I do NOT have to convince her AT ALL to buy guns. As long as we have the money shes fine with it!

The only problem is she will want to shoot it. Hrmm...now I will HAVE to get that .243 I want...

Excellent choice. I've never shot any of their .22's, but their tactical and varmint rifles are tack drivers right out of the box.

Now for the fun part. . .http://www.savagearms.com/cs_barrel.htm
