Number 10 is just a good start. I have a few more than 10. I've got that many shotguns. You can't have too many guns. My wife has seen so many guns come home with me she doesn't even ask what it cost anymore
"LR" stands for Long Rifle. This is to distinguish it from the puny .22 short cartrige. Whatever gun you chose, enjoy.
I take it you didnt read the whole thread. Ill fill you in
I wanted to know the diff between rimfire and center fire then what LR ment. Everyone already answered that. I went to cabellas to LOOK at guns ( I wanted a .243) but walked out with a .22 savage.
I just won a auction on Gunbroker for 5 Turk Mausers and got "The Look" from the better half.
I was perusing the Shiloh Sharps website a couple of days ago, and showed my wife 'The Quigley Rifle'.
Well, since she's a fan of T. Selleck, she said, "If you want it, buy it."
I showed her the price, and she didn't flinch. She was happy when I said that there is about a 3 year 'wait'.
The big question for me is: .45/70 Gummit, or, .45-110???
Actually the best question is. . . . .
(I wonder what SHE wants?????)

Take a look on gunbroker.com or the other auction sites...also check out gunsamerica.com.
If Shiloh offers it...go for something unique...like .45-70 WCF...and no, that not the same as .45-70 Gov't.
Winchester sold around 200 Model 1886's in that caliber, some High Walls were made, too. What it was...was a .45-90 case with a 330 grain bullet, the rifling was the same as .45-70 Gov't. Yes, Winchester went wildcatting back in the 1890's...there are several other odd ***** just like this one.
I honestly think that IF I wind up ordering it, I will go with the .45/70 Gov't.
I already have the Marlin 1895G ('Guide Gun') and the 1895CB ('Cowboy'), so, I figured that I'd stay with the caliber.
I already load for a BUNCH of calibers, anyway, so, I won't add to the confusion.
I kinda like the looks and 'allure' of the .45-110 though. But, it is black powder only, I think. Too much headache, for me. I like the KISS routine.
I do have to find out what her hidden agenda is, though. THAT might wind up costing me MORE than the rifle will.
Congrats on your first gun Savage makes some great rifles. You might look into a Savage bolt action for your 243. I've seen a few Savage bolts that were tack drivers in 25-06.

The funny thing is thats exactly what I want. The same as my gun now but in .243. I would like it to be black instead of gray but oh well. I will also need a bigger scope .

Or...you could pick up one of the excellent Savage 99 lever action rifles...these were introduced in 1899 and discontinued several years ago. The 99 features a rotary magazine, is hammerless....and will accept a top mounted scope.
Around here you can hunt (& a LOT of people do) with a .22 . Only use it on small game but it's fun & cheap. You would NEVER regret buying a .22.
The 12Ga shotgun should be next then a larger rifle. You get more long range varmit hunting down there and have more use for something like a .222, .223, .243....
Smallest I use for bigger game is my .30-.30.
I second this. As said previously, get a .22 and get comfortable with many rounds, cheap. A Mossberg 12 ga with a multi choke barrel shouldn't set you back much either, and you can go bird or deer hunting with it, shot to slugs. If you're still into it, then go with a hunting rifle.
There are some locales where you can only hunt deer with a shotgun and slugs, because they don't want a wannabe Rambo putting long range lead into houses...
