I am looking to get a set of BFG All Terrains. I would like to go with some 16x8 wheels with 5" backspacing...I can get these for a great deal from a buddy. Would you guys reccomend a 285 or 295 width tire? I want a good look, but don't want them to stick out too far.
My truck is a stock 2000 F150 4x4. I am planning on cranking the torsion bars after the wheels and tires are on.
The BFG site and reps have told me the 295 would fit on the 8". The 295 is listed as having a 7.5"-9" rim to work. Why wouldn't the 295 work on an 8" rim then?
Why not crank the bars? I wouldn't do anything extreme, just to level it out which wouldn't take much.
I have the BFG 295/75/16's on my 94 f350 4x4 with 7" wide rims, so I'm sure your 8"ers will be fine. Altough they are equivalent to about 33.5x11.5" tire, so I would more worried about them fitting, as they barely fit my 350.

Sorry for abandoning the post!
I have cranked the bars on 2 vehicles with VERY negative results....
1 70 Dart with a 6cyl K member and bars, 440 conversion. Handled like crap stopped like crap.(though defying the laws of engineering caused these issues!)
2 90 S-10 Baja, Did just what you want to do, level the stance(almost 1.5"). This time decrease in ride quality, and flex off road(which sucked in the first place...)
Though I haven't done it to a ford so they may be different and a little more forgiving.
BTW... As mentioned above the tires should fit the rim nicely They MAY have a little sidewall bulge. As long as you stay within the MFR specs youre safe. I had 33x12.50s on an 8" rim with no issues, and 31x10.50s on 7" rims with no issues.

That's good to hear. I've heard from other Ford owners that as long as you don't increase the pre-load too much, everything should be fine. They said the ride is a tad stiffer, which most don't even notice. It's either crank the bars a little or buy a levling kit and then have it installed. I'm on a budget, and free sounds pretty good to me!
