What width rim should be run on a 33"X12.5 inch tire? I am getting conflicting info from different tire suppliers. One says go with 8" because you want the tire wall to give when off-roading. Another says use 10" because you want as big a footprint with not so much tire wall bulging. I am putting a BDS 4" lift on my '95 Bronco and they only say their 4" lift will accomodate a 8" rim.
What does everyone else run?
15x10 will make a better footprint and wear more evenly, but 15x8 will make the tire a little taller, and you may have clearance issue's witha 15x10. since the tire will stick out further, it may hit the corners of your fenders when you turn. I had this problem on a lowered truck and a lifted truck. I would personally prefer a 15x8 unless I was going with a taller tire such as a 36", then I would go to a 15x10
I had an `87 Dodge ramcharger with a 4" lift and 33x12.50s. At first I ran 15x10s in an aluminum rim. The truck wandered a bit on the highway and really grabbed the ruts. Then I went to steel beadlocks in 15x8s and the highway manners were noticeably better. It was much easier to live with in the real world.
The 10" rims look a little better, but the 8" rims seemed to make the truck handle better. IMHO.
My delima is still pretty much un answered. 16x9 with 38x15.5 inch pj`s? Too skinny of a rim or will it work with out wearing too much in the center of the tires? Or do i need new rims?
15x10's with 33x12.5 bfg muds and 5 inches on a 2wd truck. so 3-4 inches for a 4x4. i clear the bfgs easily no rubbing at all, not even on the radius arms
I put a set of 10" american racing wheels on my f150,i believe they had 3.75 inches of back spacing. They stuck out a good 1.5 inches past the fender well. This means you won't have much paint left on the front of your truck unless you put fender extensions on it.If you go with the 33's on 8 inch rims it will all fit inside the wheel well.Good Luck.Billy.
So why not just stick with the 7" wide stock wheels? I am wrestling with the same question as kuduhunter - 8" or 10" wide on a '95 Bronco. But it's kind of hard to justify buying new wheels if I'm only going an inch wider. 33x12.5's will fit on 7" wheels, right? (even though the tire shops might say otherwise).
I think I'm seeing from this thread that 10" will work better in general for off-road (wider footprint), and 8" works better on the street (steering/handling). Which will work better at low tire pressure, and am I risking anything with a 7" wide wheel other than looks?
You're risking the tire popping off the bead on a 7" wheel. You really shouldn't be running an 11.5" tire on a 7" rim either. Most manufacturers recommend a minimum 8" wheel for 11.5's and 8.5" for 12.5's
Will they "fit" on the wheel? Yes. Is it a good idea to run a 12.5" tire on a 7" wheel? No.
