I wanted to tap into the weath of knowledge that is on this site, from this group. I was wondering what is the smallest width tire that can be mounted on a 10" wide wheel? I currently have 20" x 10" wheels with 255/50R20 tires and am wondering if I can go with maybe 235/40R20 tires (or even 225/40R20). I'm having a rubbing issue with the side of the truck bed and am looking for a fix other than having to tub the bed or get wider fenders. There is clearance for the wheel, it's the sidewall of the tire that's causing the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm already using spacers and the wheels are centered in the wheel well from fender to truck bed. I have about 1" clearance from wheel to truck bed and 3/8" from the wall of the tire to the truck bed . I get rubbing when I turn the corner sharply or enter my driveway (there's a small curb)
Are you running original Rims or Mags?
Because if you're running original Rims, you could always go back to the 7.00X15's that came w/ the truck & Copper Tires, Hercules, Specialty Tires of America, just to name a few still make the Original sizes, as well as the Metrics of course.
The distance between the bedside and the wheel well opening lip is right at 11". You may have a problem with any tire on the 10" rim because the rear axle stays parallel to the pavement on a curve but the body/bed tend to lean some and I imagine the tire is greater than 10" wide. Tire sidewalls usually stick out +/- 1/2" past the rim. If you don't want some rubbing maybe a narrower wheel, wider fenders, or tubs. I bet this info didn't help at all.
Thanks everybody for your input. You all reinforced what I thought I had to do. I pretty much knew that I couldn't (and didn't really want to) go with a smaller width tire and was figuring that I would need to tub the bed. Now I can add another project to the list for this spring. Once again, thanks for all your imput.
