Steering Part Question??

Long time reader, first time poster!

I'm needing to replace a part on my steering column but am unsure what it's called. The part in question is at the bottom of the steering shaft and connects via the rag joint to the steering coupler and gear box. Any idea what it is called? Can it be replaced without finding an entire steering column? If so, does anyone know where I can find one?

Many thanks!

Michael

Hi Michael, Please be officially Welcomed to the 61-66 FTE forum.

The rag joint connects the steering shaft (the wheel on the other end) to the gear box. This rag joint is a metal/tire like material/metal part.

Are you thinking there is more to it than that??

jowilker,

The part I'm looking for is at the end of the steering shaft just forward of the rag joint, the flange part that connects to the rag joint and steering coupler. The person who owned the truck before let the cab mounts rust away which bound the steering and trashed the flange.

Sounds like you need a new rag joint? There is a bearing in the bottom of the column on some of the older trucks and others just use a plastic collar stuck in the bottom of the column. If you need a new bearing you can use one from the top of a junk yard column. Plastic collars can be replaced with a nice Oak collar. Rotten cab supports will cause damage to the lower steering column bearing and or collar. I use the newer plastic rag joint D5Tz-3A525-A, available from your local Ford Dealer.

Michael, I think the part that you are looking for and William has recommended is a all in one piece. The tire looking part has metal connectors on both sides.

I ordered a new couple from LMCTruck hoping it would have both pieces, but it only had the part that connects to the gear box. I'll take a picture when I get home and post it, hopefully it will make things clearer.

Please post photos in your gallery that you can set up through the User CP above. Your huge photo overran the page and slows dialup users.

thanks

That flange is part of the steering column. You will need to visit the bone yard. I have never seen that part as screwed up as yours! The junk yard will have one for sure just be certain that you have the correct length. Auto or standard makes no difference. The slots are a safety feature in the event of a total rag joint failure. You may be able to weld materiel on the flange where it is worn out and then reshape the slots with a grinder and file. Honestly I'd get that column out and on the bench for a complete overhaul. I would also switch to a Ford PS unit and appropriate PS pump.
