1970 F-100 truck. Replacing steering column. See attached photo. Column on top is original. Note the steering wheel threaded stud is short. See second photo, the replacement column (model year unknown). Threaded stud is twice as long. Question -- Can I just saw off the first inch of the threaded stud on the replacement column so the steering wheel will fit properly?
It looks like a later model with the warning flasher switch on the turn signal mount. If both shafts are the same length in relation from the bottom of the column to the rag joint flange just swap the shafts since you also have to swap the turn signal mount.
Fish, NO, DO NOT proceed without further checking. In 73 Ford most trucks were switched to the Saginaw power gear and the connect point moved about 2 1/3 in closer to firewall. You are not driving the truck with the column out, try test fitting the new column 1st. When proper fitting has occurred the dash cuff will bolt up. If not the cuff will be under the dash.
The columns are basically the same length from the horn button end of the shaft to the gear shaft that connects to the axle. It is the connect point that is different. |-----x--| vr |----x---|
Column and gear have to be matched. As long a both are swapped either can be used.
