I have had the same issue (drivers heater seat not coming on, but light works) for a couple years now in my 2003 F-150 Lariat.
How hard is it to get the seat out of the truck? What do I have to disconnect before removing it? And do I really need a Ohm-meter to check resistance? I was hoping I would see a charred connector wire and replace that.
Also, any tips on how to remove the seat cover would be appreciated.

If you look under the front you can release the cover and pull it up. did you not find the wire from the thigh heater to the butt heater fried ?

Hello.. I am having the same problem with the heated seats in my 02 250 SD.. Could you please send the pics that you have to me? karamatm@optonline.net.
I just repaired both of my seat heaters. They were burned pretty badly. If I'm doing the autopsy right, it looks like the wire that bridges the two heater pads (seat/thigh) is the problem. It is made of very fine strands - almost hair thin - and is routed under the plastic upholstery stiffener used to hold the seat cover in place. I think over time and from use, the stiffener fatigues this wire making it into a resistor rather than a conductor. I just soldered in a new bridge wire and made sure it wasn't routed under the upholstery stiffener - which wasn't too difficult since the end had been melted off by the fried bridge wire. Now I just wish I could remember how to post pictures!
I can not get the seat cover off. It seems to be permenantly attached to a bar under the front of the seat.
Any way someone can explain to this me?? IT'S GETTING COLD!!
Use a screwdriver and start at one end.....helps to push down hard on the front of the seat......it is not easy to do !! but it will come if you work with it

Use a screwdriver to do what? It seems like the seat comes down and attaches (permenantly) to a some sort of long piece of metal directly underneath the front of the seat. Am I detaching that metal from something. Unscrewing something?? (I know---I'm helpless)
Also, what kind/size wire should I use to replace the connecting wire??? (if indeed that is what I find to be the problem)

Mine is a white piece of plastic hooked over a rail on the front. Just need a screwdriver to start it off. You may want to remove your seat so you can see how to get it off. I used 14 guage to repair the jumper areas
My Mom has a Aviator and she Love's her heated seat. Drivers side went out and Ford replaced for $600 and the seat does not heat as well as before. Found out from service that the part has been changed b/c the old element was too hot. So I'm thinking of swapping the elements from passenger to driver so she will have the old high heat and passenger will be less heat. is this possible and how difficult is the element change?
The element pad is held on with some type of spray adhesive. It will come off if you are very patient and work it a little or use a razor blade to slowly shave the heater pad from the seat cusion. To not break or cut it, I'd figure about an hour per seat to take your time.
I'd check if the right and left seat cushions are the same and if so, swap the whole cusion.
Here is my drivers cushion. The element was burnt in the forward pad. This about 22 gauge stranded wire loomed through the cloth.
Note: This is not the passenger cushion. I'm pointing to the crossover wire for demo. You will know if they are burnt, it will be black.
On my passenger cushion the crossover wire was burnt that connects the two lower cushion heating pads. This is about 18 gauge stranded fiber re-enforced wire. You can see the shadow of the heavier wire in the cloth.
FYI,
I repaired the cross over wire that was burnt in the passanger cushion, it worked fine for a month. The seat failed agian! I took it apart and the other crossover wire had fried......suggest you change both wires the first time.
So, in this cushion shown you needed to repair the burnt section? A little on each side of the break? Did you just find the break and solder it back together? Did you place a little cotton gause above and below the repair?
