The only problem I ever had with steel toe boots was the leather sometimes gets cut over the steel. If you are kneeling down a lot, like when putting a floor down, then the toes will get damaged pretty easy.
Also make sure you get a wide enough shoe for your foot. I have got some before than were not the right size and my foot would rub on the edge of the steel after the leather stretched a little. Needless to say i did not wear them long.
Did you look into Chippewa boots? They are excellent quality.
I wear steel toed boots and 'sneakers' and have had no issues. One time I had my toes a little close to the campfire a little too long, but my toes sure stayed warm for awhile afterwards. The only other issue I've ever heard of is the weight can increase fatigue if you're on an extended back country hike. I wish I had been wearing a pair when I dropped a floor jack on my foot 20 years ago.
Red Wings didn't have wide enough boots for me, so I went with Timberland Pros. They have a much wider toe cap, and this is the first brand of boot I have found that was actually wide enough to fit right. Titanium alloy toe, they are actually lighter than my NSTBs, warm and comfortable, and the latest pair has lasted almost two years so far. The real nice thing about these is when the leather does get cut over the cap, the toe doesn't rust. I would recommend getting toe protectors, though, just to reduce the wear on the toe.
Jared how wide a foot you got? I wear 12H and Red Wing is the only place that has been able to fit me decently. Are the Timberlands a special order??? I find their sizes to be a joke.
I've been wearin georgia boot steel toe loggers for over 6 years now been through several pairs and keep comin back for more the reason I need new ones is the cow sh** at the farm is terrible on the leather
Just a standard 12 wide, The local Red Wing store only carries up to medium, anything more is a non-returnable special order, starting at about $180. Looking at the ones they had on the shelf, they had a narrower toe box than the wally world specials, I couldn't even get my feet into them. At Sears, they had the Timberlands in a width and size that actually was comfortable.
I have a pair of Wolverine steel-toed boots that are the right size, fell fine when I put them on, but my big toe on the left foot gets sore after I wear them a while. Now they just sit in my closet.
i work in construction and wear boots 40+ hours a week and this is what i use. i have a pair of steel toe wolverine "durashocs" i have had them for 2 years. still comfortable to wear. the only thing bad about them is the leather around the soul near the steel has worn thin (where the boot bends) and now has a hole in it. i bought them at a wolverine outlet marked for $165, paid $100 for them.
i also have a pair of timberland steel toes that i was given as a replacement and they fit well but tough on the puppies at the end of the day. after haveing the durashoc souls and now these hard soul things i would rather have the wolverines.
i have not tried red wings, though i dont have the $$$ to buy them. i know you get what you pay for. but thats just a bit expensive to me.

Your Red Wing place must not be a big store... in my area they usually keep a 12h in stock in more than a few styles. If not they will gladly order two or three in to the store to see which I like and feel more comfortable with.
P.S. have never had any luck with Wallyworld shoes. My dad has had a few pairs of the chippewas and loved them.
Got a pair of Timberland Pro hikers about 6 months ago, and it is now all I'll wear. Titanium instead of steel, most comfortable footbed I've had in a LONG time. I had to quit wearing hikers and such several years ago because they'd bother my feet after a few hours, and had to stick to pretty much New Balance. But after wearing these things, I'll never go back if I can help it.
Also have a pair of Lehigh steel toe loggers, but I don't wear em anytime except winter, too warm for my taste (I'm not much for heavy insulated boots). Works out nice for dealing with snow, and they're almost as warm when I need em to be as the pack boots they replaced.
EDIT:
I have a heck of a time getting shoes to fit - 14W... So when I find something that fits, I usually buy a few pair. I have to go back up and get a few more pair of these things soon...
Been wearing steel toe boots for 20+ years and wouldn't do any work without wearing them. I wear my Timberland PROs 84 hours a week over here in Iraq and they are never uncomfortable. I wear them when working at home also. You'll have to try the different brands until you find the ones that work best for you. With any luck, that will be the first brand you get. Good luck.
I wore my first pair of Redwings for 4 years before replacing them with the same mode (still have them both) My second pair went 10 months before the stitching gave out on both boots around the outer heel. The outsoles are also too soft for me, they wear out within a year (work on concrete/dirt) I have since bought a pair of CAT boots and love them, they seem wider in the toes than the Redwings. I had a pair of CAT boots 8 years ago and liked them then.
All my boots are steel toe, can't wear a non steel toe boot, it doesn't feel right on my foot.
Just don't bump into an electric fence on a rainy day while wearing steel-toed boots--DAMHIKT. It's definitely worse than regular boots on a dry day. Other than that, I wear 'em about 6 days/week (Cats) and get about 3-4 yrs/pair, usually spending about $70 per.
