ok... i got a 02 ranger 4.0 auto... and the trans is getting worse and worse, in between 2nd and 3rd gear it slips and the truck revs up and then goes into 3rd. another thing, every once in awhile when i slow down to a stop the trans dont shift down and it will be in like 2nd or 3rd gear, then it will kinda start shifting down while im stopped and it jerks the truck a lil. my dad talked to a guy he works with and he said that ford trans are/were known to have a seal go out above the trans filter, has anyone else heard of this, or have any ideas that could help me out??? thanks for your time
Sounds just like the problem with my 01. Turned out to be a bad seal on the valve body, they took care of it under warranty. I've heard it is a common problem with these transmissions.
i took the pan off today and there are alot of junks of what appears to be a gasket, and i can see were the valve body gasket as a junk missing out of the back driver side corner, does anyone know how hard of a job it would be to drop the valve body?? thanks seth

I've never done it myself, but I have heard it's doable for someone with a little bit of mechanical know-how. You are going to need the Valve Body Service Kit (3L5Z-7M203-JA) and the Valve Body Separator for your application (looks to be 1L5Z-7Z490-BA). See:
Hey Seth, please let us know if replacing the gasket fixes your tranny troubles. I have a 2001 3.0 auto and am curious about some of the tranny problems and solutions people have with them. Thanks.
hey PW01, what is the manufacture date on your ranger cuz mine could be close to yours, mines 10/01 but a 02 model. i wonder if its really close then i could have a bad valve body too.. thanks seth
