6.0 Auto Trans Shift Question
If you place your transmission in the 3rd gear or 3 position and accelerate from a dead stop does it shift through 3 gears (1>2>3) or does it just start out in 3rd and stay there without shifting. Yesterday, I noticed on mine that when I accidently droped the shift lever into 3rd it was actually in 3rd and did not shift through the gears like I have always been accustomed to with other automatic transmissions. I even tried it in 2nd and 1st with the same result while carrying the rpm up to the usual 3000 rpm shift point, in fact even at redline the trans would not shift.
When placed in Drive 'D' the trans shifts from normally from 1-OD with no problem.
Thanks in advance.
Reid.

yes most truck will have a short lag time going from D [or any other forward gear] to reverse, more than 1-2 seconds is not normal however.
I think that it is probably a safety feature to stop you from engaging reverse while you're still going forward. The older E4ODs (1992~1995) had a really long pause between reverse and drive that got shorter as technology marched onward. As a result I am conditioned to coming to a full stop, shifting the lever, and waiting until I feel the gear kick in. I was told by the parts people at Ford that the delay was added in the E4OD (now its been revised and rechristened the 4R100. Torqshift is 5R55 I believe) because shifting from R to D if the truck was moving in the oppopsite direction led to premature failure.
This is just shooting from the hip, but I think if you make it a pointed goal to completely stop dead in your tracks it'll pop right back and forth all day. I'm not 100% sure, but I'll give it the evil eye over the next few days.
And yes, mine does the same in 3rd...stays there....good for snow and ice.

My only question is who is going to pay for my rental??? Selling dealer says "have the repairing dealer take care of that", repairing dealer says "selling dealer should take care of that"....Good luck!

Buzz Cut hit it right on
but I've got the extended warranty and a great dealer as well (so far)
So back to the tranny then ----
Sounds like we have an Auto-manual then :-)
can put it in gear and leave it there or shift on our own !!!
Way cool for all that Texus ice and snow then to lessen the starting torque !
building a house and have to play driver while my wife decides on brick and stone and mortar colors (even though we've built before - she still has to "start over"
)but idling around the upscale neighborhoods just put it in thrid and it was a LOT easier on the fuelage and noise level...
a lot fewer people thought we were "casing" their houses to rob them
Course when we had to pull the mini-dvd out and video them so she could remember them
