I just bought a 2000 F250 SD Crew cab 4x4. I hooked up the brake controller to both of my trailers and it doesn't work. There is power coming to it but it wont activate to brakes. I know the controler works because it came out of my last ford. I have checked all fuses and relays and ther is power at the 7-pin connector. Any help would be appreciated.
WELCOME TO FTE. Hope you enjoy your stay. There are lots of people with lots of knowledge here. I'm not one of those people but I'll try and help anyways...
Is it only the brakes that do not work? Is there otherwise power to the trailer ie lights and such?
Is this a new trailer or just a new truck?
Is the trailer connector clean and rust free?
Might the trailer cable have been crimped and maybe internally the wire is severed?
Is the connection between the trailer wiring and the trailer itself secure and in tact?
Just some things to look at if you have not looked at them already
I would check that your brake controller is in fact working properly. Maybe take it out and put it in your dads truck if possible. Just to rule it out. Or check it with a circuit tester to make sure that the brake lead is supplying power down the line
Other then that I would use a circuit tester to make sure specifically that the brake "pin" is in fact working at the connector on the truck.
all the pins in the trailer have the correct power going to them when needed and i have swaped the controllers numerous times between the two trucks. The ford dealership has blown me off twice now on this problem because they say the don't have time to look at it. I think it is they just don't want to do the warranty work. So i guesss i have to fix it my self.
That's a bummer man. Sorry I couldn't be more help but that is really about the extent of my knowledge base on this. Keep checking back here though there are a lot of travelers on FTE and I am sure one of them will have some suggestions.
On all problems with trailer brakes and trucks, if I have found the voltage OK at the rear of truck, that the problem was ALWAYS a misconnected wire or bad ground at the trailer.
HAve you hooked up your Dad's truck to YOUR trailer and checked to see if brakes worked? This would be the acid test. And are you sure (according to the diagram above) that the voltages are correct at each pin? Are lights ok? Make darn sure that the white on the truck end and the white on the trailer are both ground. Ohm out from each connector to the frame of ONLY that vehicle. If you test from the white wire on trailer pin to frame, I'll bet you have an open circuit.
I figured out that it is a blown fuse or relay behind the dash because i just blew it in my dads truck today trying to figure out what was wrong with mine. Callin the ford dealership first thing monday to find out where these fuses are under the dash.
pretty sure it's in the fuse box under the hood, drivers side just ahead of the windshield. I think it's one of those 'mega' fuses, like a giant ATO fuse.
