i am unsure if there is a "built in brake controler". my EX has a plug in that is set up for an aftermarket brake controler to be connected. and i had to buy a "pig tail to connect the brake controler to the plug. there are several brands of controlers ... most swear by the protogy.
I thought there was only the wireing under the dash to connect to the controller. Should be info in the owners manual... think bigdaddymedic2000 is refering to prodigy by tekonsa.
I think Bama210 is referfing to a Ford Tow Command system, which he is not pleased with. He wants to know if the Ford Tow Command can be deactivated and then install a aftermarket unit in its place.
And the correct answer is: probally so, I can't see why not. But it may be worth having the Tow Command system checked out first...they are a good system.
Could it have been the trailer brakes that need attention, rather than the controller?
The built in Ford tow command in my truck is the best brake controler I have ever used. if you are having problems then you may want to check the trailer brakes since the tow command module will let you know if the wiring is bad. What number do you have and does it show the trailer conected? My 10000 plus trailer works great when set to 8.
I'm with the last couple of posts. The built in system, Tow Command, is much better than any aftermarket system I've ever used. It is even tied in with the trans to control shifts based on towing conditions. I'm thinking it's a trailer brake issue.
Thanks for all the posts folks. You've convinced me!! I'll check out the brakes on the fiver to see if that's the problem. I've always heard good things about the Tow Command system in our trucks and was very disappointed when it didn't work. I had it set on 10 and it wouldn't help in stopping the load at all.
Due to the wife's hip surgery last year it hasn't been on the road in almost a year so there very well may be a problem with the brakes on the fiver. Would I need another truck to check them or hook my truck back up to it and listen for the hum of the magnets in the braking system. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

Agree our 10k 5th wheel I run on 8 as well. Smooth and works fantastic with the down shifting when in tow/haul

Well that depends. If you have an early build date on your 2005 you're controller may not activate the brakes under 15 mph. I found that out two years after I bought my 2005. My Ford dealer service manager got mine changed to the newer version for free. Now it works even at a dead stop.
Might want to do a search up in the SD forum. I have seen posts of peopple having issues with the tow command system. Might get better responses up there because gassers arn't any good for towing anything anyway.
