if your wanting to know will it handle it.. if tranny is in good running shape, no leaks or any thing, i'd say yes as long as you dont add a super tricked out 351. If your talking tricked out as in a few add ons... i dont see why not.
Yea man it'll hold. Just get the transgo shift kit, and the electrical upgrade. We got a mud drag truck we run with a 408 windsor running a 2 stage 450 shot nitrous system and we have the e40d in it because it's also a driver. We're running 39.5x13.50x15 with 5.88 gears, and i have pulled the front tires off the ground at the start with it, and have ran it 2 seasons, and alot of drunk nights and it's still hanging in there.
you can call someone a liar if they have facts on paper but you can never call a man who has had the actual experience a liar. . . how long will it work though is the next question
As someone who has had their E4OD rebuilt 3 times, I'd say be REAL careful. My E4OD is pushed by a 7.3L diesel with an ATF turbo charger. The first two rebuild where shotty (maybe even criminal) work done by the AAMCO shop in Boulder, Colorado on Arapahoe Ave and I got less the 60K between the two rebuilds. The truck did not haul for any of those miles but had regular light duty off roading. I just spent another $4K to have the tranny and t-case rebuilt by a local one man tranny shop. He seems like a trust worthy guy, but time will tell. I would make sure that you have the biggest transmission fluid cooler you can find and start off with a fully flushed transmission with new fluid. And then keep your fingers crossed! If all else fails rebuld it likes these guys did:
i spent $2500 on mine. People spend a lot more when they upgrade many of the parts to make them last longer. They told me mine has a shift kit and they applied some 700R4 technology to it. They also put all heavy duty parts into it. That 4 grand price came from him also having the transfer case gone through. There is no denying it though, E4OD's are expensive to rebuild.
but still, wouldnt it be cheaper to just get another brand new e40d? i honestly don't know so im asking. i mean its one thing to make it into something that will withstand abuse and much more power for racing or constan rock crawling but if its just to make it last another 10 years like it already did lets say . . . why not buy the same exact thing that came with the truck originally in its original condition? how much could it be? at the most. . . 1500 bucks???
by getting a shift kit and other upgrades, you make it run cooler, and shift faster and firmer, which reduces heat and friction, which makes it last longer. If you use it hard for plowing or a lot of pulling, you want it beefed up some. You will notice the difference.
