I was wondering what the reliability on the E4OD is? I'm looking at a 96 F-250 4x4 with the 7.3 PSD and I think it has the E4OD in it. If anyone knows what would be in it that might help too. If anyone could tell me how long these last I would appreciate it a lot. I hope I put this in the right section, if not I apologize now.:-)
I had a 97 f250 that I put 158,000 miles on and never had a bit of trouble. My brother has it now and he has 180,000 on it and hasn't had any trouble. My thoughts are if it has been taken care of then you should be alright. Same thing for the Diesel, If it has been taken care of 300,000 is not uncommon.

It's real hard to say. It totaly depends on how the previouse owner treated it, how he/she took care of it, how much/how often they towed or hauled.
For example, I have a 97 F-350 with 106,000 miles on the original tranny. I bought it on Sept 7th 2001 used with 81,000 miles as an X-work truck for some company that ran main water lines. I know it was abused so the first thing I did was change all the fluids and filters (as you always should with a used vehicle) but I also bought a stacked plate cooler for it, a temp gauge, and an auxillary filter. When I opened it up I was suprised how good things looked in there.
E4OD lifespan runs from about 75,000 to 175,000. I had one that had looked totally clean when I pulled the pan, but it was still worn out at 116,000. If the truck has not yet had a rebuild and is over 75,000 miles, factor that into your offer.
My 95 has over 200,000 on it with no tranny problems. I do keep the tranny serviced and I do tow.
A friend of mine has close to 300,000 on his 95 and no problems there either.
I do have some friends that have had transmission problems back in the early days of the PSD. They were trying to get to much sugar for a dime though. In other words they just tried to tow too large of a load too many times.
No one can guarantee that the tranny will last or that it won't.
I have a 90 7.3L IDI so far it sucks. Or the computer part sucks. have replaced the tranny, but it shifts hard- maybe its not the E4OD's fault, but some elusive sensor or computer error code that no shop has been able to solve. I am still holding out hope, because although a chevy lover the stupid thing is growing on me.
