I was getting milage like that and my mechanic tightened up every hose clamp on the turbo and I got about 1 MPG per clamp. I also needed a map sensor. The mechanic did not just run the computer he actually was reading voltages and levels of a bunch of stuff.
Awe intersting, didn't think about that, if the map sensor is bad and showing high boost, it could in theory dump more fuel, but you would still see smoke if that is the case. Definately something to look into though.
Does the truck roll pretty easy when in Neutral? On flat to very slight decline, I can push mine myself at the door. Also, what about tires, inflated properly? Are they the right size? if not has the speedo been re-cal'd to show proper speeds? I use the mile markers on the interstate and get a 5 marker average, i.e. if on 3 at the post, look down again in about 4-5 minutes to see if the posts are still at 3. It would have to be quite a ways off to error calculations that much though.
What kind of RPMs are you showing at highway speeds? Say 60 and 70mph. Do you know what gears you have? I just went to 315s on my truck and my speedo is off around 10%. I would guess that my odometer is also off that much. That still wouldn't account for that much differance in you mileage. What about your front hubs? Are you sure their not locked?
Depending on tire, I would stay at 55 if you are not loaded, you can check the hubs for sure by turning the front driveline by hand when not engaged. If on is engaged, it will be difficult to turn and you can see which one doesn't rotate with the drive line.
I am doing right at 70 @ 2000 rpm, haven't really driven 55 mph lately, I have 3:73 gearing. Your 2000 probably doesn't have a Cat, but the stock muffler really restricts the flow. Have you disconnected batteries to reset the PCM. Probably won't make any difference though.
I know the hubs are in AUTO mode. They were locked when I first got it, and I had to take the handle of a pair of channel locks to use as a key to turn em. I couldn't turn em with my hands.
