I have an '86 with the 1 bbl carb. Is there any difference in any of the different model number carbs? Is there a "better' or "worse" one of the bunch? I am bored, wondering if there is anything I can tweak on the 1 bbl.
Guess so. My 78 carb has no external solenoids or anything. I have a manual choke, and only one vacuum line from the dist. which is even stamped DIST on it. did a rebuild kit, and after taking it apart, I realized how simple this one was. I have no doubts about it firing up in any weather. my 86 was tempermental with hotter weather. I have a chrome 6 inch air cleaner on it too(from p.a.w.). anything that goes wrong can actually be fixed on the roadside, which is nice.
I ordered a YF for a 68 model with manual choke to replace the troublesome Autolite 1100 on my 65. I absolutely love the Carter. Simple, reliable, direct bolt on. It was like I bought a whole different truck. It really made that much difference!
The original question was concerning any difference between various models. One difference I know is that the mounting flange is smaller on the older model carbs. The bolt spacing is closer on the 60's models 240/300 intake manifold. Maybe early 70's too, not sure. So basically if you have a later model 300 you may not want to go back too far in search of a good carb because it wont bolt on without modification.
There are a number of YF variations. The Ford variants are the YF and YFA primarily. The YFA is much shorter than the YF. The YFA is the emission version. Bolt spacing, the small engine 200,250 and 4 cyl versions have a smaller base than the 240-300 ones. I can dig and get more information if you need it.
There was also a bolt spacing difference on the cars too.
I tried to bolt a 1976 YFA from a 250 onto a 1972 200
and the 76 YFA had a bigger flange. I like the YF series.
The accelerator pump can be replaced just by taking the
top off and the mixture is easy to adjust with the screw
attached to it ( the needle is spring loaded). Very basic,
but that makes them immune to ills beyond the capacity
of the average mechanic to fix (cheaply!).
