I think Rusty has a point - each motor has come in many different 'versions' except the m-blocks, and thats the main reason why the m-blocks are nto so popular. They were made at a time most ford motors sucked, and there highly efficient 70's emissions controls couldnt be as easily upgraded to the 80's requirements and were ditched in favor of motors that could be more easily outfitted for more stringent emissions. The 460's and 390's all had several years in which they were real performers. Like I already said, the 400 is my favorite motor, but for a mud truck and a stock motor my choice would be a 460 (given the choice anyways).

I think the 302 HO motor would be the way to go because 1.it's cheapest to operate/replace,2.it will rev higher longer than the big motors.I like 460's in trucks, but high rpm is not the 460's forte in stock form.Stock FE's kinda hard to come by.351m bottom end not very strong. And you can probably trip over 5 302's in the boneyard while looking for the other engines mentioned.

The 302 HO that I have is rated around 250 HP and 300 ft lbs of torque, and fuel injection is nice too. I agree that the replacement cost of the engine would be fairly cheap and I know they take a good amount of abuse also.
I love the 460, I have been swapping them into both pickups and other assorted vehicles....D*mm price of gas, I had a 302 with a vortech went like hell...and still got 23-25 mpg...
