MIT might have a bit better reputation as an engineering school, but I'd go with Stanford. Seems a tad more well rounded.
As an engineer who's occasionally worked with MIT grads, I guess I expect them to be super smart engineering gods. After you work with them for awhile, and see that they're about the same technical-wise as guys from Joe Blow Univ., it's sort of a let-down. Let's just say if your kid goes to MIT, they'll have a lot expected of them.
no way would i want my family going to virgina tech! unless they provide bullet proof vests, that place is way to dangerous anymore.
It could have happened at any school. VT grads are well rounded students who typically never have a problem finding meaningful employment.
But, since it did happen at tech and not at just any school, tech will have to overcome that black cloud and figure out how to not allow these events to happen again.
I vote for Stanford at least from a weather standpoint. Academically speaking its comparing apples to oranges but here in No. Cal we have absolutely the finest weather and beaches
Qualifier -- I don't know a lot about either school. However, MIT seems to spend a lot of time telling everybody that they're the best in the world. Not sure that I agree. They are forever publishing 'discoveries' many of which I find questionable. (But that's just my opinion). However, they do have a good rep.
Stanford also has a good reputation, but they don't seem to spend as much time telling people about it.
Also, they have athletics ( don't know that MIT does). Too bad that the PC police made them change the team name to Cardinal ( the color not the bird!)
Anyway, he probably can't go wrong with either choice -- but he might check with a few potential employers to get their reaction -- these are big name schools and companies do recruit their grads.
Pretty impressive that he got accepted, you should be very proud.
I hope, for your sake, that $$$ are not an issue -- I think that they're both pretty spendy.

My daughter got some info from MIT. They were wanting her due to her abilities. From what they said it sounded like a full ride to their school. But she aready has at least three scholarships from our local Tennessee Tech. She has enough so far with those and the others to almost pay for her way through. It has a great reputation as well. So she wanted to go to Tennessee Tech and is already signed up for this fall. From what I have seen the abilities of someone outweighs the school they went to. I have seen both good and bad skills out of big name schools. I would look at how well they train you over the name.
I know there are plenty of other schools, so far he was accepted at 11. These are the ones he narrowed it down to. Stanford has offered the $58K a year tuition, fees and dorm for only $4,400 a year. Still waiting for MIT's offer. He is at MIT now, they flew him out there.
