I don't know what the stock 390 does for RPM but my stock 460 would die out a little past 5000rpm. Open up the heads and change the cam and I could bounce of a 6K rev limiter in a heartbeat. With some simple rod/piston upgrades you can reliably run it higher than that. In the mud you need to be able to spin the tires FAST to clean the tread or you're not getting anywhere.
FWIW I'd never consider anything but a 460 for the mud and even at that it would be a BUILT 460.
i voted 390, i have had it reved out to about 5500 stock with an auto and i can pull almost any tree up and any car/truck around without hardly noticing it.

Yeah, my 460 would run out of wind at 5,000rpm too. However, my last 390 had a good intake manifold, headers, cam and the rest was pretty much stock and I could turn it to 6300 before it fell on its face. But then again, if I knew some of the "tricks" to the 460 back then to what I know now I would probably have a different opinion. Either way, I do have to say the FE and 385 series are Fords best engine in my opinion. I am a torque person so therefore I gotta have a big block!
edit-I do have a 429 in my 75 F-250 that runs good but I am very tempted to do/put a few goodies on and see how it reacts.
should be obvious what I vote for, but a 302 is a good little motor in it's intended place, IE a CAR. A 351M makes a decent boat anchor. 390s are great engines, I have had 10+ 390s loved them all, and they took a beating, but harder to come by, harder to find transmissions for, harder to find parts for, and still less than 400 cid. Also a stock 390 really doesn't pull that much past a 460 for rpms expecially a later model smogged up unit, the 390s really hated the smog junk to the point that is actually one of the contributing factors to Ford getting rid of it.
I obviously voted 460, not only is it a strong engine in factory trim but doesn't take much to make it really perform, and with a little more money you can stroke it adn make some series power. Add yet a little more money and you can spin them faster than most small blocks and make stupid HP.
i voted for the 460- only because the vote was for a stock form motor.. if it wasnt for that minor stipulation i go for the 390... thats what i run and like.. they're built very stout on the bottom end and save quite a bit of weight- especially with a aluminum intake on it. easy on fuel and doesn't take alot to get good power from them..
What?!?!? This poll does not list the 400 as an option? I think my rights are being infringed!!! I better write my congressman...
I know this is pretty nuch a joke, but he was saying, which engine would you choose, out of the ones in the poll. A 351M is so close to a 400, to where you could vote for that one, and tell him if he goes that route, make it a 400 with a 400 crank.

You're congressman contacted me... it appears I am required to create a new poll and include the 400 per his request to remain in compliance with the Equal Representation of Engines in Polls Act of 1981...
Actually, I wasn't trying to discriminate... I just listed the motors I already have, except the 460, but it can easily replace my 351M.
