What engine would you choose for a 4x4/mud truck? I plan to run 34" tall tires with 3.50 gears. Please base your decision on which engine can take the most abuse and the cost and ease of replacement. It will see a lot of high RPM and high temperatures when mudding.
Im a big 460 fan. I ahve had several off those an they are a pretty tough motor to beat. Power is what you want. Power is what you get with the 460. Low end torque is outstanding. You wont be able to rev the 460 as high as a 351 or 302. But with the log stroke big bore 460 you dont need too.. The old FE motors 390 in particular are very stout an very tough an are good power producers. I remaber several older ford trucks back in the late sixties an early seventis vintage thathad the 390 an a friend off mine has one off those old 72s with the 390 all original. Still uses it to this day. Runs great. Just my 2 cents good luck.
What about the 300 6cy ? Its a great engine for torgue and fuel economy. My 1979 F150 300 6cy in ganny 1st and low on the transfer case can go any where. The 400 is also a great engine, had a 1978 f250 supercab with the 400, full time 4x4 and posi rear end and it was great turck in snow country, never let me down.
Since you said stock, I voted 460.
The 302 isn't meant for anything other than regular road usage,
the 351M, 400s are pigs stock, and aren't good till you get rid of all the smog crap on them,
the 360, 390s don't are alittle similar to the 351, 400s, not all that much power stock.
If I could find a good deal locally on one with a transmission I would be interested, but I'm trying to use what I have. I already have a 351M/C6/np205 for my build-up, and also have a 302, a 390, and a 5.0HO from a '92 t-bird. I don't have any 4x4 transmissions for the other engines though. I think I will use the 351M for now, and since a 460 seems to be a popular choice I can swap one in later.
That would be the best thing for you to do. Put in the 351M, C6, NP205, and later on you can easilly swap in a 460 with new motor mounts and that's it. The 390 would invalve alot of other changes.
Three gas hogs and a kiddie car mill, No thanks
All that aside the 390 and the 460 will give you the most grunt in the mud.
The M is a dog in stock form, and the 302 IME doesn't work well in fullsized trucks when you need lots of grunt.
the 460 is good for low end torque.the fe 390 also has a lot of power.i think both are good.ive had both,i really like my 428SCJ better than those, but you did say stock,so it doesnt count here.
I have built a 460 in the past and a 390. I was much happier with the 390 then the 460. Yes, you get good grunt out of a 460 but you can't get the rpms like a 390 can put out in my opinion. I just thought my 390 was a better engine all around and I had nothing but problems with the valve train assembly in my 460 and not the 390 (weird huh? shoulda been the other way around).
