Tranny cooler used for a PS fluid cooler?

Would the tranny cooler inside the radiator withstand the pressures of the power steering pump?

Should work fine. Make sure the hoses are clamped on really good.

I can't say for sure one way or the other, but. The line pressure for an automatic transmission will never see more than a couple of hundred PSI. But a P/S pump can exceed 1000 PSI if you hold the steering in a locked position like a real tight turn. You know, getting into a parking space. I would talk to a couple of trans shops or a radiator rebuilder. Good luck.

If you route the return from the steering gear you shouldn't have a problem since it is the low pressure side of the system. I have to ask the question, if you have a radiator with the in tank tranny cooler and that is what you are thinking about using to cool the PS, what are you going to use the cool the tranny?

I was wondering...kinda want to use it for the PS in my 5spd cause that cooler is already there. But when I look at the high pressure hoses on the PS pump it just makes you wonder is all.

Again, if you route the return hose from the steering gear through the in tank plate cooler you won't have a problem. The output side of the PS pump would be a different story. Many of the return lines from the steering gear to the PS pump reservoir are secured with just a screw on clamp which gives you an idea of the pressure or lack thereof in the return line. Keep in mind though that the return fluid going through the plate cooler is going to be at the in tank temperature of the radiator. Not sure what the temperatures are of the PS fluid with ambient air temps over 90 degrees with and without the use of the plate cooler.

Why would you send power steering fluid from the return line thru the trans cooler unless you have a need to heat fluid to 180 degrees F? You want to cool not heat, order a cooler like the Ford trucks in 2001 up use. My oil gets hot in the pump from engine shut downs not running.
Ford cooler part number, F81A-3D746-AC. 4" x 6 1/4" x 3/4" thick, I recall around $43. Comes with end brackets that can mount on angle iron between the frame rails below the bumper. Put in all hard piped except between the pipe bracket and pump for movement makes for a clean reliable installation.

I just want to make full use of everything on the truck. And with the 5spd tranny the intank tranny cooler isnt being used. Im just trying to figure out my options. You are noting that the tranny cooler exit is approx. 180 degrees... would it work as and engine oil cooler then?

Engine oil temp isn't much above water temp so the reduction is minimal, if you must have a motor oil cooler i'd use a seperate air to oil cooler mounted up front. Radiator trans coolers are low pressure, I wouldn't want the motors 50 plus pressure in it as well more lines that can burst, then what? Put in reverse flair plugs in the trans cooler and forget abot it. Motors need hot oil to operate unless your a motorhome pulling grades, in the winter you may cause the oil filter to bypass alot, hot filtered oil is better than cold dirty oil.
