Anybody ever bypass the trans cooler in the radiator and use an external cooler in its place along with the regular 6.0 trans cooler. I think the tranny cooler in the radiator is not helping it cool.
o1 F350/V-10/4R100. Have already installed the 6.0 cooler. Pulling my 5th wheel...truck and 5ver at approx. 18.5K. Pulling a long grade....temps get up to 215-220 then down the other side of the grade they get back down to around 190. Cruising on flat ground...runs right around 190-195.
Flow is is good......just put the 6.0 cooler in place of the V-10 that was there. Has always ran a little warm. Guy I got the truck from had the trans rebuilt @ 90k. According to the invoice I have....says the tranny cooling system was flushed and cleaned. That is why I put the bigger cooler in because I heard you cannot flush them. That got me to thinking about the cooler in the radiator. And the fan does work....when pulling sometimes..you can hear the fan lockup and roar.

I should have been more specific.
By flow I meant direction. Don't assume it is correct.
Am going to assume the routing is ok....when I installed the new cooler I put the hoses back in the d=same position. Will see if I can find a diagram of how they route. The temps are on the trans gauge.
The correct routing is from the front of the trans to the radiator cooler, then to the 6.0L cooler, then return to the rear of the trans.
Ok...thanks. Looks like it would have been very hard for the trans shop to mix the lines up since they are hard lines. Does it make any difference on which spot on the radiator the line that comes from the front of the tranny goes to?
In at the farthest connection from the lower rad hose.
Out at the closest connection to the lower rad hose.
Reason being.
Coolant is being drawn into the engine from the coldest part of the radiator.
Which means transmission fluid will be cooler going into the external cooler.
