Maybe if they put the "stock" back in stock car racing, people would care. I don't know of any manufacturers still using pushrod, carbureted v8s nowadays. And a nose piece with a simulated grille painted on it doesn't make them actual cars.
Thank goodness I have a DVR so I can record the races. That way, after I skip through the commercials and "debris" cautions along with the boring parts of the race, I can watch a 4 hour race in less than an hour and not miss a thing.
Speed channel does this for you too. It's the closest I've ever got to seeing a NASCAR race, that roundy round crap is just too boring for me.
There are many reason the cars are not stock anymore. The first has to do with safety. Please show me any current production car that can survive a 200mph colision. As soon as the production cars went to unibody construction that meant the end of using true stock cars.
Concerning engines, every class of motor sports has engine limitation and the rules change almost ever year. We could go back to the old days where you could use any engine that was in production but at that point the races would become boring. The company with the best engine wins. They put the skids on that back in the 60's. If you where not a company team, i.e. Ford, Chevy or Mopar you could not afford to play.
Last but not least I'm glad Toyota is competing and in fact I hope other manufactures will also compete. You make a car here in the US then come play. We could have BMW and Mercedes. But there as to be rules or it just comes down to whoever has the most bucks.
If you really want to see stock car racing I would check out your local SCCA events. I still think they have a stock class.

Stock car was never stock. You could always tweak the engine. The only requirement was that it was used in a production car. I think the SHO Taurus tweaked could get there.
Once the engine builders get a hold of the engine it will be pumping out 800hp. All you have to do is go back and look at the older cars. None of those cars could do 200mph from the factory even with the big blocks in them.

Did they even go 200mph in NASCAR back then either?

Yep I don't remember what the record qualifing lap is for Taladaga but its like 212 in 1987. 1982 was the first year 200mph was broke in qualify. The other to remember is that in the draft they go even faster.

Personally, I don't care if they do 200MPH. If you took a stock Mustang GT out to Talledega you could probably do 160. I'd rather see a stock car, on the track. I know, they'd pull out all of the interior, and put in a roll cage. Have the protective seats, diffrent glass, everything like that. And yes, your mechanic could tinker with the engine, and tweak the stock suspension. But still, its the same car, and same stuff that comes factory on the car. Thats what I want to see.
Thats NASCARs roots though. Moonshiners who could drive, taking stock machinery, tinkering with it, and winning on sunday. Usually drove home in the same car after the race.
