Starter replacement

Anybody have a suggestion on getting to the top bolt on the starter of a 1991 7.3? I was looking at it this evening and could even see it to get a wrench on it.

Use a long extension with a socket. It should work fine.

The problem I have is the getting to it. I made an attempt but the problem is there is no room between the starter housing and frame to work the ratchet.

Dunno how much different the frames are between the 91 an 01, but on my tuck the only "easy" way to access the top bolt is with a 17mm open end wrench. There is just enough room to get about 1/4 turn per throw on it. As long as I leave the bottom two bolts tight, the top one thread out pretty easily by hand once the torque is broken on it.

Depends on which starter you have.
I have always had a Mitsubishi gear reduction starter on mine.
Over the years I have seen four different styles of the same starter.
How you get at the top bolt is different for each one.
I have never done a Delco direct drive starter.

You have to feel the top bolt, if you get to where you can see it you will not be able to get your arm to it.

I just change one on my 94 turbo and it was a piece of cake just use a 3/8 flex ratchet a 10 inch ext and a 1/2" or 13mm flex socket

If you run you finger over the top where the starter attaches you can feel the top bolt, then with a wobble (15*) extension and the right socket, you can undo it by feeling the socket and guiding it to the bolt.

Thumbs up

Thanks for your help. I got it out and the new one in and it starts likes crazy. It took some time and a few choice words. I found that 2 inch extention a wooble joint and then a 6 inch extension did the trick. I also used an air ratchet to speed up the process. But again thanks for all of your suggestions.

Just asked, because I kept my old one and rebuilt it.. Very easy to rebuild (usually just brushes and maybe bearings $20-30 sometimes a solinoid) and then you have spare.. Food for thought next time one goes....
