Old/New D60

I've got a D60 from a '71 F-250 and I'm wondering if I can swap the newer 35spl axles and diff in place of the current hadware?

thanks.

Not without some work. The spindles on the regular D60's are too small to accept a 35 spline 1.5" shaft so they have to be bored. This is something that a machine shop should be able to do for you but I can't even provide a guess as to what they'll charge. I've heard of guys who buy the reaming tool to do it themselves but you need a BIG drill and a jig of some sort and it still take a long time and a lot of patience to bore them. IF you get the spindles bored all you need to do is swap in a 35 spline carrier and the new shafts will fit fine.

The spindle is the portion that the bearings mount on. The tube is large enough, just not the spindle. You'd want it bored to 1.6" or so, enough to have a little clearance there. I did some checking and machine shop prices range from $150-$400 to ream them. The "official" spindle reaming tool can be bought from Randy's Ring and Pinion for about $400. OR there's the redneck option: Get a high quality bimetal 1.5" hole saw, build a jig and make a pass. Then give the teeth a slight bend out on the saw and make a second pass to open it up a little more. You'll need to come back in with a stone or reamer to clean up the spindle. I don't know that I'd recommend going this route but there are people who have done it and said it worked for them. If you don't have a jig to come in dead centered on the spindle you can screw it up and may as well throw the axle away.

Cool, thanks Ivan.

I'll talk to my dad, he's a mechanic where we work, and there's a full machine shop, 4 CNCs and alot of other stuff, maybe he can help with this.

Isn't the pre-73 D60 2" narrower than the 73+ unit? You may be able to get spider gears and shafts from a similar year D70 for the 35 spline shafts, or you may have to have custom length axles made.
