I was reading a website (see where reading gets you kids...avoid at all cost) where in a D60 rear you can take a 35spline D60 carrier and use D70 shafts with no modifications. Is this true?
Didnt seem right. What modification is needed to run 70 shafts? Dont you have to line bore the housing and carrier? Im not planning on doing this...just was doing some reading and thought it was interesting.
Machining the spindles is required to run a larger shaft. Easier to just buy a locker set up for larger shafts and have the spindles machined.
The D60 catches a bad rap for being a weak unit, because of the necked down factory shafts and limited splines.
If anyone is going to spend the dough required to upgrade a 60, might as well go straight to 40 spline units, and never look back. The ring gear is plenty large enough to handle as much as you can throw at it, and upgrading the shafts makes tham right.
Plenty of guys are using the visteon / sterling and larger rear ends but they often sacrifice ground clearance.
I have had good luck with my 60. I have busted a 10.25, and saw a 14B snap an axle in the mud yesterday.
I guess the 70 and sterlings are cheap, and do not require a bunch of work. They are strong out of the box, but if you are going to spend good money on a real locker, the axle shats are cheap by comparison, and a very good investment.

The axle shafts are 2 different lengths in the 70. One is pretty short, and that one wouldn't work for sure. But I don't remember if the other one was the same length as a 60, probably not.
the d60 rear ain't really that strong i know of a couple of guys that once they upgraded the shafts (and front hubs lol) the gernaded the ring gear (and i mean gernaded through the diff cover).
What did you break on the sterling, as busted shafts and the like are something you don't really hear of with the sterling.
Im building a sterling now. I was just reading some stuff on the internet about D60s and thought it was interesting. I had heard about boreing the housing and a few other things but I agree its just too easy to buy and build a 1 ton. To do the D70 mod to the 60 Id have to buy a new detroit and have the spindles bored anyway so really Id only be saving the cost of the gears.
its amazing how much crap you can read on the internet. The same website said you can put D60 shafts into a toyota 7.5 axle.
Yeah I have been wondering if it would be worth my while to put some money into a D60 rear for my high boy. I plan to be running 40s, locked ft and rr, healthy 460 with a 4 spd. What do you guys think? I have two D60 rears to play with, or would it be worth it to just build a Sterling 10.25 instead?
Go sterling or D70. I wish I had. Gear sets are adverage priced $175 install kits are about the same. Detroit lockers are a little cheaper for the 70 $550 vs $575 for the sterling. Its just that sterlings are so easy to find. One plus for the 70 is disk brake kits are easier to find or maybe Im not looking in the right place.
