Hey guys, I'm Dan. I'm a little ways south of St. Louis. I've got a '97 f350 I bought from my dad a few years back, just now really getting into working on it. Definitely been enjoying the ride lately. Glad to join up and get to know some of you in the future.
Welcome Dan to the Missouri chapter and I see you already found the monthly chat and BS thread. At the end of each month I post a live "click on" link to the up coming months thread, so it is easy to stay subscribed.
I was a baby brought home from the hospital in my, used to be dads, 1969 f100 short bed. Little by little I’ve been working on it over the last few years. It’s good to be apart of the group. bdtruck.
I’m not having much luck attaching the horn button to the steering column.
My dad owned the 69 truck since new. While I was away in the Navy he was involved in an accident. He and Old Blue survived. He did bend the steering wheel. years later Dads in heaven now and I’m working on the truck. I don’t know where he bought the replacement parts.
I now have working turn signals and brake lights after replacing the wiring harness and turn switch. I have the new horn spring. The shaft is too long for the center cap to attach. What am I missing here ? Thank you for your help.
Welcome to the FTE Missouri forum, and the Missouri forum NEW MEMBER thread. You are more than welcome to stop by our main chat and BS thread. But you might want to give YOUR state chapter a look into also. NC link. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum88/
To me I see a big gap and see the TS switch inside. So maybe you have the incorrect steering wheel.
X2 on that might be the horn button for THAT steering wheel, but THAT steering wheel is NOT for that column. And trying to get it to set/install more is only going to make the threaded steering part stick out further.
I could be wrong ,
but i'm pretty sure that it is the correct steering wheel and horn button for the truck.
Edit: i Just noticed that the column looks like a different color that the dash. Maybe the column has been changed out.
so the wheel could be correct for the truck, but not for the column
i read where bad can mounts can cause this problem
I would like to keep the steering wheel if I could and try to make it work. Everyone is correct, this column was replaced years ago. This is the way I grew up seeing it all. Daddy just yelled out the window and didn’t use the horn 😎. We used it around the farm. To put it on the road now , I need to have a working horn. I cut down the stud as everyone can see. The horn button now fits. I’m sure I’m missing a spring because the only way for the horn to blow is if I touch the spring / cap to a piece of metal. Trouble is the gap between the top of the cap and the underside of the steering wheel. Any thoughts or ideas besides welding a washer to the underside of the steering wheel ? Thanks
you can maybe adjust some of that gap out by disassembling the column and adding a shim (washers) between the steering shaft and lower bearing-bushing.. or maybe just changing the steering shaft.. they changed the column, shafts and other parts thru the years 67-72.. and mixing parts up can get confusing at time
just read your profile.. it said a 73 f100.. but it is clearly a bump.. can't see the door panels or heater controls so cant tell the year from the interior.. but dave1 may have some 'extra' bump steering column parts.. unless i have still have them in the box up at my storage unit
opps sorry just looked again and i seen it has 68-72 doors..
