Hey everyone, my name is jeremy and I own a 79 f150. Its a work in progress, that was helped along with the recent completion of a 400. I had what i thought to be a lean fuel condition due to a 1506 edelbrock, and ended up being a faulty holley oil filled fuel pressure guage! Anyways i am living in kansas city north of the river, and i thank you again for welcoming me.
Yo steelone, welcome to the funny farm. C'mon in and make youself at home by posting up. I just looked at your profile and saw you're a union operating engineer in the KC area, local101 I assume. I too am an operator out of St. Louis, local 513.
Name is Rory and I'm living near Cottleville for right now and work at Wash. Univ. near Clayton.
I've been looking for a truck capable of pulling a skidsteer and brush clearing attachment and that's how I came to looking at a particular F-450 that's for sale near by. It's a 2000, 4X4, 7.3L diesel, six-speed transmission, crew cab and has a flat bed on the back end. These F-450's are not at all easy to find and they're even harder to find with 4X4 and the six-speed transmission.
I'm planning on purchasing an ASV RC-100 rubber tracked skidsteer and mounting a brush cutting attachment on it, probably a Fecon carbide cutting head actually. I originally was looking at F-350's, but when I added up the weights for the skidsteer, cutting head and the trailer, I realized that an older F-350 is not rated to pull that kind of weight(+17,000 lbs), so I started looking for F-450's.
I haven't actually purchased the truck that I've been looking at, but I've been here on this site gathering information for severa weeks now and I've found it's the best site for doing just that.
BTW: Does anyone know of any mobile inspection services in the St. Charles area that I could have look at this particular F-450? I'd like really like to have someone check the engine out in the truck, maybe do some kind of diagnostics on it, check out the turbo, injectors and so on. A buddy of mine that is a master diesel mechanic at UPS test drove the truck for me after I did too, and he aggreed with me that the truck doesn't have much power, as in 'get up and go' when you stomp on the pedal. We never heard the turbo spinning up and just simply didn't feel any good acceleration from it. There's no observable smoke coming from the exhaust either. I've driven my former FIL's 7.3L F-350 with 6-speed tranny before and that thing would push you back in the seat some.
Sorry for such a long post! I don't have any experience with Ford trucks, been a Chevy & Hummer owner before.
Welcome to the group! Did you post this in the 2000 7.3L forum? If you post it there, there's a much better chance of getting some responses since the guys in that section know that particular engine.
Howdy, Rory!
We routinely pull more than that kind of weight with our F350/six speeds, but I tend to agree 'tis better to err on the side of caution and go BIGGER lol!
I agree you should also check out the forum for the 7.3's. whatever problem arises, there is usually someone here who has been there!
personally I think if the truck comes with adequate service records and looks dry & tight, you may have a good deal there. If you want to see if the engine is pulling codes or any thing else, you might consider renting a code reader from o'reilly's or someplace like that.... buy a good chilton manual, keep good batteries in 'er, buy an extra cps and a 10mm socket to keep in the glovebox and you should be good to go!
This is a great place to frequent, if only to keep your ear to the ground, lol!
You didn't mention what kind of Trailer you are hauling that skidsteer on, but I should let you know that with that size truck and a dual-tire,dual axle trailer operating for profit you need a CDL and all those glorious exciting regulations that come with it.
good to see you here!
Tom
Most of you diesel junkies already know me, but I thought I'd pop in and say hi to the rest of you since I'm a member of your chapter now.
I probably won't be terribly involved with the chapter since I don't live up there, but I have family from KC north to St. Joe and all the way up I-29 to the Iowa line. I also have a sister in law in suburban St. louis so I visit "home" several times a year.........Don't act all surprised if the big blue Arkansas Ford rolls up on one of your GTG's it's just lil old me.

Don't know you yet, but welcome! I'm just a noobie Diesel Junkie, but I'm learning quick!
