While getting some quotes on P265/75R16 Brigestone Revos, the fellow from my local tire shop mentioned that along with improper speedometer readings, there's a chance that my ABS brake system could fail. Does anyone have any insight into this problem? Or do you think he's covering his backside? My quote by the way was $650 mounted and balanced on my 1998 XLT. Thanks in advance for your help.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
I've never heard of anyone having problems with the ABS system after installing larger tires. Besides, 265s are so minimally "larger" than stock that it probably wouldn't even be enough for the sensors to notice.
The only way tire sizes could affect the ABS is if not all the tires are the same size - you can go as big as you want, they just have to all be the same size.
I have 265/75R16 Revos on my 98 XLT and there is no problem with the ABS and they look and ride great. You can fix the speedo in your 98 by replacing a gear in the speed sensor (VSS) on the tranny. I got one at a local speedo shop and it took 5 minutes to replace. The stock gear has 20 teeth - for 265/75R16 tires you need a 19 tooth gear.
Thank you gentlemen, I couldn't think of any reason as to why the ABS would be affected. The salesman seemed a bit caught off guard when I requested a very specific tire and size. He immediately asked if I was 'sure" I wanted the Bridgestone Revo’s. He then asked if I had found it on Tirerack.com. I guess it's a problem to know exactly what you want. I think he’s feeling some heat from the internet, but the truth is that his price seemed good considering Tirerack.com was asking $500 with out shipping or installation.
I just ordered the tires! My local shop was able to quote me 194.53 mounted, balanced and with new valve stems. On top of that, they will loose my old tires, rotate my tires every 6,000 miles and offer free repairs for the life of the tire. Bring on the snow! Also, I went to this website and learned that the tire will increase my speedometer reading by 3.5 mph at 60 mph, not a significant problem.
Taller tires will cause your speedo to read low relative to actual speed.
You can correct the speedo in earlier Expy's (not sure what the cut-off year is) by replacing a gear in the speed sensor (VSS) on the tranny. I got one at a local speedo shop for $12 and it took 5 minutes to replace. The stock gear has 20 teeth - for 265/75R16 tires you need a 19 tooth gear.

Yes, 1997 & 1998 have gears. 1999 and up are electronically controlled.
Thank you. I appreaciate all the help. I just returned from the tire shop with my new Revo's. They look great and seem to fit the vehicle much better than the stock tires. I also put on new Bilstiens, new front tie rod links and bushings. I think the Expedition is now riding better than when it was new. All I have left is the gear for the speedo.
