Red face How do I grease my throw-out bearing?

I have recently installed a rebuilt tranny and a bunch of other stuff including the throw-out bearing (see earlier posts). The bearing has a zerk fitting and I did not grease the bearing *&%^$#$%. It appears that the bearing is making noise. Please tell me that I do not have to remove the tranny to grease it! Anybody know if I can get this done without removing the 100 pound piece of metal with these toothpick arms of mine in my garage again? <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

Have changed many clutches and seem to recall only once have I greased the throw out bearing. They are pre greased and I usually go thru a clutch or 2 before throw out bearing requires any grease. On occasion, when truck has set for extended period of time in the cold and winter, the bearing makes a loud noise until I make couple trips then it quiets down. Seem to remember greasing the bearing w/out having to remove tranny. Recommend pulling the clutch fork boot back, should be able to see the zerk fitting. If remember correctly, bearing can be installed where the zerk fitting is expose and another where it is not. Do you feel lucky? Also, use caution, don't want to detach the fork from the retaining clip, reattaching can be done but you don't want to create any additional work. Pressing clutch peddle may provide better angle, can determine once you have checked it out. I have grease gun w/ both a flex and rigid type fitting so use which ever looks like it would work best.

They're pre-greased. I would get a new one anyways...

A throwout bearing with Zerk fitting was only pregreased at the factory when the truck was new.

Bought over the parts counter, there is only a dab of grease in a T/O bearing that has a Zerk fitting.

Ford recommended lubing the throwout bearing when the truck was lubed and the oil was changed.

Originally that was every 1,000 miles.

By the mid 1960's Ford said every 2,000 miles.

If dusty conditions were encountered, 1,000 miles was recommended.

Without the Zerk fitting, the bearing is sealed, and cannot be lubed.

Thumbs up

Got it! I Removed the cover on the bottom of the tranny/bell housing and stuck a grease gun on the zerk and gave three pumps and done! Seems quiet now. I didn't want to pump too much into the throw-out bearing and have grease get on the clutch. Thanks for the advice all.
The dreaded kingpins are next. Wish me luck.<O></O>
