Motorcraft semi-synthetic 5W-30 or 5W-20 is recommended, cheap and readily available at Wal-Mart.

Royal Purple pure synthetic is the way to go.

2000 V10 with 97700 mi. I have always run Mobil1 full synthetic 5W30, but I was bored the other day, so I called Mobil1, and they recommended 5W20. Maybe I'll give it a try next time.

Whats the difference between Royal Purple and Mobil1 anyway. They are both full-synthetics, which protects better than dino oil, but is there a noticeable difference between full-synthetics?

Also, whats your change interval? I usually change oil at about 7500 miles or so. I burn about a quart or so between changes, which I add as needed.

Thanks!

Isaac

I couldn't possibly tell you the actual differences between the oils but I know there is quite a difference. Sure both start with a synthetic base stock but what they do from there is kinda proprietary stuff.

I always found that I "used" more oil when I used Mobil 1. I think it was due to evaporation losses. I never had oil loss issues with Motorcraft.

I tried RP this time around because I needed to change my oil and it was the closest 5W-20 to me. Wal-Mart is 50 miles away. RP was available at NAPA on the way home.

haha, yeah, id say 50 miles is a good incentive to try a different oil

I've heard that synthetics tend to have more oil loss too. I dont know why though.

How many miles are you guys going between changes? I believe the manual recomends every 5K? afreemanmd goes 7500 miles, im guessing due to running synthetic. Im used to changing every 3K, im not a fan of these extended periods between oil changes. Anyone know whats changed to make the factory recommend longer times between changes?

I know europe laughs at us and the 3K mile oil change, and many tests show its too early on conventional cars, but id rather change oil a lil more and be safer then sorry.

I am use to going every 2,000 miles even with synthetic. Synthetic offers better protection for longer however synthetic does not stay any cleaner then normal oil. It gets just as much dirt in it and the dirt still causes wear and tare. I will probably go every 3,000 with my Excursion even with synthetic.

I know some people that have run amnsoil and only did a filter change after X amount of miles, topped off the oil and went another X amount of miles. Mileage depended on the person and the vehicle. Ive seen a number of people that were sending in oil samples for analysis and getting the green light to keep using the oil. They just chnaged the filter because as you stated, it gets dirty just like dino oil.

Changing at 2-3K with a good quality synthetic is a waste of money, IMHO. I go 5K and sometimes longer if I don't get the time to change it.

Oil is just too good these days. When's the last time you heard of an oil related breakdown?

Amnsoil (spelt Amsoil) will try and justify the inflated price of their oil products by extended oil change intervals. Most Amsoil oil products are NOT API certified, which is a requirement by ALL US auto manufacturers for the warranty to stay valid, along with the recommended OCI.

Bottom line, there are many API certified oils on the market, that cost much less than Amsoil products. Why risk loosing your warranty?

Yes amsoil, typo, sorry. I've known many people that have used amsoil with extended periods between changes (with filter changes) and have had outstanding results. Including independent samples sent to labs for reports (surprisingly cheap). There is no way you would be able to discredit what ive seen on multiple boards about the protection amsoil offers.

Now if you wanted to tell me mobil 1 is hyped up to be better then it really is, then i might start believing you.
