I think 2 of the lower lights behind my instrument cluster have burnt out. Can anyone help me with the process to replace them? I don't want to have to pay a dealer big $$ to replace something simple. I just don't know how feasible it is to get in there myself and I don't have a shop manual.
you just have to get out the trim around the radio, the trim under the steering, and the trim around the instrument cluster. There is 2 screws for the trim of the radio, and 3 screws for the instrument cluster and 2 for the trim under the steering.
After that, you have to get out the 4 screws arount the instrument cluster. After that, the is a frew "stars screws" to get out arount the panel. You just have to get out the module, it should have 3 pieces, and back there, there are the bulb. Maybee it is #194, im not sure.
The hardest part is getting the trim out of the way. You may have to have the key on to move the shift lever if you have an auto trans, (I did on my Explorer) so please be sure to disconnect the batteries - you do not want to have the air bags deploy while your face is in the wheel.
yea you will def have to drop the shifter down and disconnect the battery but make sure you wait a couple of minutes before you start to work because the air bags have a back up battery i think it lasts for five min before it dies down and you should change all of the bulbs when you have it out there will be two size bulbs back there all of the warning lights will be one size and the rest will be another there not 194's there a little fatter then a 194 but you can use a 194 but if you go to pep boys the have a little computer by the light bulbs that will tell what size you need
You must disconnect the tiny little cable that moves the shift indicator in the instument cluster. I broke mine when i was trying to do the job but luckily i could fix it.
It disconnects where it hits the shifter under the steering collum.
